A tense situation unfolded at the Westfield Old Orchard shopping center on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the area as a call about a person with a gun led to a full-scale lockdown. The incident, which left many shoppers and workers in a state of fear, was ultimately resolved without any injuries or shots fired.

At approximately 2:33 p.m., Skokie police received a report of an individual carrying a firearm near the mall. In response, a temporary lockdown was immediately put into effect. Business owners and employees were among the first to be alerted, with some receiving direct messages from the mall’s security team. At a hair salon inside the complex, someone who answered the phone was instructed to "shelter in place," signaling the gravity of the situation.

CBS News Skywatch captured footage of a significant police presence outside the mall, particularly around the Macy's store. At least eight squad cars were seen parked near the store, while additional units were stationed outside Nordstrom. Officers were observed walking along the perimeter of the mall, armed with rifles, reinforcing the sense of urgency.

Natalie Buckham, a Macy's employee, shared her experience of the event. She had just returned from lunch when she noticed the heavy police presence. From the parking garage, she called a coworker, who urgently advised her to stay in her car and lock the doors. “They are proceeding with active shooter protocol,” the coworker reportedly said.

Buckham described how she remained in her vehicle while coordinating with other staff members to ensure customers were safe. One employee, trapped in a stockroom, was having a panic attack and crying on the phone. Buckham reached out to the employee’s mother for support.

Resolution and Aftermath

The situation eventually came to a close when police determined that the incident stemmed from a quarrel between two individuals. Both were located and taken into custody. Despite the lack of violence, the initial response by law enforcement was swift and extensive.

José Morales, a shopper at Lululemon, recounted his experience during the lockdown. He and several others were told to barricade themselves in the back of the store. Some people were visibly shaken, making calls to family members and live-streaming their experiences to ensure their safety. Morales noted that once it became clear there were no shots fired, there was a sense of relief among those present.

In addition to the mall, police also responded to the nearby Old Orchard Towers, where security personnel instructed workers to remain in place due to concerns about potential threats. It wasn’t until the investigation confirmed no further danger that the lockdown was lifted.

Expert Perspective

Arthur Lurigio, a professor of criminal justice at Loyola University of Chicago, commented on the police response. He emphasized that officers must remain hypervigilant in such situations, as they cannot afford to take risks. He compared the events at Westfield Old Orchard to the recent shooting in Midtown Manhattan, where an NYPD officer and three others were killed. Lurigio suggested that the strong response seen in both incidents reflects a growing trend in law enforcement protocols.

Emotional Impact

For many, the emotional toll of the incident lingered long after the lockdown was lifted. Buckham described the difficulty of returning to work and continuing with daily tasks. “Back at work, clocking in, making sales — that's kind of the way of the world,” she said. “But do I agree with that? No, I don't. Wholeheartedly, I don't.”
