Iowa Officials Investigate Alleged Violations of DEI Laws at University

Recent events have prompted significant attention from Iowa officials following the release of a video that appears to show a University of Iowa employee discussing how staff members are circumventing new laws related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The video has sparked concerns about compliance with state regulations and has led to formal complaints and investigations.

The video was shared online by Fox News, drawing immediate reactions from state leaders. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds took swift action by submitting an official complaint to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. In her statement, Reynolds emphasized that the content of the video demonstrates a clear disregard for the law and the legislative intent behind it. She stressed that such behavior is unacceptable and must not be tolerated.

In response, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird confirmed that her office has launched an investigation into the allegations. A statement from Bird’s office highlighted that regent universities, including the University of Iowa, are required to comply with state laws, such as the Iowa Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Act, along with other relevant statutes and executive orders. The investigation follows the governor's formal complaint against the University of Iowa.

The incident came to light during a recent meeting of the Iowa Board of Regents. Sherry Bates, the president of the board, expressed strong disapproval of the situation. "Following the law is not optional, nor is working around it," she stated. This sentiment reflects the broader concern among officials about adherence to the newly enacted legislation.

The law in question was signed by Governor Reynolds last year and became effective on July 1, 2025. One of its key provisions prohibits DEI offices and programs at public universities in Iowa. Barbara Wilson, the president of the University of Iowa, addressed the issue during the meeting, stating that the university takes the allegations very seriously.

Republican House Representative Taylor Collins echoed the governor's concerns, expressing frustration over potential violations of the law. He argued that those who violate the law while using taxpayer funds should face consequences, including possible termination. Collins also noted that other institutions, such as Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa, have shown better compliance with the law and demonstrated a willingness to adhere to the requirements.

However, not all lawmakers share the same perspective. Democrat House Representative Rob Johnson viewed the video differently, suggesting that the individual in question was not attempting to circumvent the law but rather trying to support people. Johnson emphasized that DEI efforts are not about simplistic categorizations but rather about how individuals interact and care for one another.

Johnson also criticized the law itself, arguing that it could hinder opportunities for understanding and appreciating diverse perspectives. He pointed out that without considering diversity, there is a risk of missing out on valuable insights and experiences.

During the meeting, President Wilson reiterated the university's commitment to cooperating with the ongoing investigation. She mentioned that the University of Iowa has already reached out to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office and the Board of Regents to coordinate efforts. If any policies or laws are found to have been violated, the university pledged to take corrective actions without hesitation.
