GoFundMe Launches After Washington County Teen Loses Barn to Floods

A Teen's Deep Connection to Farm Life
Fourteen-year-old Cailin Knopp has been deeply involved in 4-H and farm culture since she was just two weeks old. This way of life has always been a part of her, something she has loved and cherished. However, this connection was nearly taken away on Saturday when heavy flooding struck Washington County.
Cailin shared with Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that if most of the animals had died as they initially feared, she might have stopped showing them altogether. The event was a devastating blow to her and her family, who had spent years nurturing their livestock and building a strong bond with them.
The Night of the Flood
It started with heavy rain on Saturday evening, but the Knopp family didn’t immediately realize the danger their almost 100 rabbits and goats were in. "All of this was underwater. We took pictures, and it looks like a lake. It looked like you were at one of the local lakes," said Cailin's mother, Nikki.
The family quickly jumped into action to save the animals from drowning. When Cailin first stepped outside, she was overwhelmed by panic as the water rushed past her. "By the time I even got to the pool, Cailin's barn that was here, that had her smallest goats, was just gone," Nikki recalled.
Nikki, along with her son and husband, rushed to open the barn doors, guiding the animals to higher ground. They had to pull and encourage the more frightened animals to leave, all while the water level was already dangerously high. "The ones that we got out were definitely underwater for at least some point; it was above their heads," Nikki said.
A Miracle of Survival
Thankfully, all the animals managed to escape and were later examined by a veterinarian, who confirmed that they were lucky to be alive. However, the damage to the property was extensive.
Cailin described how a smaller barn with fencing that housed the miniature silky goats was completely washed away, ending up in the neighbor's woods. Additionally, the larger barn containing the rest of the rabbits and Boer goats suffered significant damage. "It broke down the door. It took a lot of the pores off the wall and snapped the bucket, strings, and stuff," she explained.
Rebuilding After the Storm
Despite the losses, the family is determined to rebuild. Cailin’s older sister is organizing a GoFundMe campaign to help restore the damaged barns and replace the supplies that were lost in the flood. This initiative aims to support the family in their efforts to recover and continue their passion for farming.
The community has rallied around the Knopp family, offering support and encouragement during this difficult time. Their story highlights the resilience of those who live close to nature and the challenges they face when disasters strike.
Looking Ahead
While the immediate aftermath of the flood is still being processed, the Knopp family remains hopeful. Their dedication to their animals and their farm reflects a deep commitment to their way of life. As they work to rebuild, they are also reminding others of the importance of community support and the strength found in unity during times of crisis.
