Ghana's Global Vision: Kyerematen Teases 2028 Run

A Vision for the Future: Alan Kyerematen’s Political Journey
Ghana’s former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, has made it clear that his political ambitions are far from over. He recently announced his intention to run for president again in 2028, signaling a strong commitment to shaping the future of both Ghana and the African continent.
In an exclusive interview, Kyerematen reflected on his decision to leave the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2024. This move was not impulsive but rather the result of years of observing the party he helped build drift away from its original values. He emphasized that his departure was driven by a sense of duty to align with principles he believed were being compromised.
“I became part of the NPP as a founding member in the early 1990s because I was attracted to certain foundational values of the party,” he explained. “At a point when I felt these values were being eroded, I started complaining about these challenges. The vehicle carrying the ideals had completely departed from the original ideals, and it was time for me to move on.”
Kyerematen’s exit from the NPP led to the formation of the Movement for Change, a new political initiative aimed at bringing about meaningful transformation. His decision to step away from the party was met with surprise, especially considering his long-standing reputation as a potential leader within the NPP.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor once spoke about the party’s leadership in generational terms, highlighting Kyerematen as a key figure in the next generation of leaders. However, despite his extensive record, Kyerematen found himself excluded from the top position. This led him to launch an independent bid in 2024, which, while unsuccessful, did not deter him from his political aspirations.
His career spans both domestic and global leadership roles, showcasing a diverse set of experiences. In 1994, he was recognized as one of the 100 global leaders by Time magazine, alongside notable figures such as Bill Gates and Condoleezza Rice. Additionally, in 2013, African heads of state unanimously endorsed him as the continent’s candidate for Director-General of the World Trade Organization, a position among the top four in global governance.
Despite the outcome of his 2024 presidential campaign, Kyerematen remains focused on his political path. He expressed a desire to contribute more significantly to the governance of the country. “I’m working on making sure that I consolidate my political path,” he stated. “I’m not sure what that path will be, but I still want to help with the governance of this country in a more significant way than before.”
When asked about his future plans, Kyerematen was clear: he intends to run for president again in 2028. “Yes, definitely,” he said. “I think the country will greatly benefit from my experience, exposure, and network around the world, and my vision particularly for Africa.”
While he did not specify the political vehicle he will use for his 2028 campaign, Kyerematen framed his candidacy as one rooted in national renewal and continental leadership. He believes that Ghana is at a critical juncture where it needs leaders who can elevate the country’s role on the global stage.
“Now if you scope the country right now and look at other people who will be able to not just build on the track record of our previous leaders but actually more importantly take Ghana to lead, not just the country but to lead the continent into a future of prosperity, stability, peace, and security, then obviously I think I come up on the radar,” he said.
Kyerematen’s journey reflects a deep commitment to public service and a belief in the power of leadership to drive positive change. As he prepares for the next chapter of his political career, his focus remains on the future of Ghana and the broader African continent.
