Star Wars Treasures on Display

The museum will feature some of the most iconic items from the Star Wars universe. Fans can look forward to seeing Luke Skywalker’s X-34 Landspeeder from A New Hope, General Grievous’ TSMEU-6 Wheel Bike, Anakin Skywalker’s N-1 Starfighter from The Phantom Menace, and the Speeder Bikes from Return of the Jedi. In addition to these physical objects, the museum will also display concept art and other materials that offer insight into the creative process behind the beloved franchise.

Lucas shared his personal journey with art and comics, revealing that he couldn’t afford real art during college, so he turned to comic art instead. Over the years, he has built a collection of over 40,000 pieces, which he refuses to sell. For Lucas, art is deeply personal and emotional.

"The idea that people can tell you what art is... from my experience making movies, other people's opinions don't mean much," Lucas said. "The only thing that matters is what you do and how you feel about it."

This philosophy underpins the mission of the Lucas Museum, which is dedicated to the belief that stories have the power to affect people and build community. According to Lucas, genres like science fiction can inspire us because they plant ideas that lead us to believe we can achieve the impossible.

The Role of Art in Society

Guillermo del Toro emphasized the importance of comics and art in shaping societal values. He pointed out that comics were among the first to address social issues, such as standing up against fascism. Del Toro also touched on the role of technology in art, particularly the use of AI.

"People say you can do art with an app and, I'm sorry, but you can't," del Toro said. "It's the difference between eye candy and eye protein. Personality and emotion are what you need. I'm sorry, they don't happen in a f** app."

This sentiment underscores the museum’s commitment to preserving the authenticity and emotional depth of artistic expression.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, co-founded by Lucas and Mellody Hobson, will occupy a 300,000-square-foot building featuring expansive galleries, two state-of-the-art theaters, and over 150,000 objects.
