Game Industry Seeks Next Big Breakthrough at Gamescom 2025

The Global Games Industry Convenes at Gamescom
The global games industry is coming together for the massive Gamescom trade fair in Cologne this week, with hopes that upcoming major titles like "GTA VI" can revitalize the sector. This year’s event promises to be a significant moment for the industry, as it looks to recover from recent challenges.
On Tuesday, the opening night will feature a showcase of major releases set to hit the market in the coming months. Among the highlights is "Black Ops 7," the latest installment in the popular "Call of Duty" series. This game is expected to draw a lot of attention from both industry professionals and gaming enthusiasts.
Wednesday will provide trade visitors with the opportunity to explore the exhibition stands and network with other industry players. Starting on Thursday, tens of thousands of passionate gamers will flood the venue, turning it into a vibrant hub of activity through Sunday.
Last year’s Gamescom attracted nearly 335,000 attendees, showcasing the event's ability to bring people together. Studios often set up large displays featuring consoles or PCs, allowing visitors to experience the latest game releases firsthand.
Nintendo is making a return to Gamescom in 2025 after missing last year. The company has been riding the wave of record sales for its Switch 2 console. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox division will unveil new portable hardware that is expected to launch later this year. Sony, the Japanese giant behind the PlayStation, has chosen not to participate this time around.
The atmosphere among the approximately 1,500 exhibitors attending this year is mixed. While major publishers have recently returned to profitability, job cuts over the past two years continue to impact the industry. In early July, Microsoft announced plans to lay off around 9,000 employees, including hundreds from game studios like "Candy Crush" developer King and several projects, such as "Perfect Dark" and "Everwild."
Battle for Attention
The industry is undergoing significant consolidation following the peak years during the COVID-19 lockdowns when a captive audience fueled growth. According to Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics, this trend is evident as companies streamline their operations.
Tracking site Games Industry Layoffs reports that around 30,000 workers have lost their jobs since early 2023, with over 4,000 layoffs recorded this year alone. Despite these challenges, the global games market is expected to maintain revenue just under $190 billion this year, according to data firm Newzoo.
The number of players and hours spent playing games remains stable, but the increasing number of titles competing for attention makes it harder for each game to stand out. With giants like "Roblox" and "Fortnite" capturing the attention of hundreds of millions of monthly users, competition is fierce.
Microsoft's Xbox, the largest games publisher in the world, has shifted its strategy to offer titles on competing console hardware. This move has proven successful, with Sony also benefiting financially. As Circana expert Mat Piscatella noted, "It's a little bit of a win-win all the way around."
Some PlayStation games are also making their way to Xbox, with "Helldivers 2" being the first to be available on both platforms and PC.
Success on a Budget
In an era where the cost of developing high-spec "AAA" games has reached into the hundreds of millions of dollars, securing sales is crucial. However, several low-budget games have recently captured the attention of players through engaging gameplay, storytelling, and unique art styles. One example is the French turn-based battler "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33," which has sold four million copies.
Christopher Dring, founder of The Game Business, highlighted that there is a growing realization that high-quality games do not always require massive budgets. However, he also pointed out that for every success story like "Clair Obscur," there are ten games that fail to gain any traction.
Smaller developers must fight hard to secure funding and bring their games to market. Despite the rise of cult hits, analysts predict that Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto VI" could become the biggest entertainment product launch in history. This could be the much-needed boost for the struggling industry to regain its momentum.
