Major Retail Chains Cutting Back

One of the most notable examples is Rite Aid, which operated for 63 years before beginning a massive liquidation process. The company has been closing approximately 1,274 stores through going-out-of-business sales. The company’s flagship store in Selbeyville, Delaware, was its longest-running location. Despite the closure, the company will continue operating a second store in Rehoboth, Delaware, as an interior design center.

J. Conn Scott was founded in 1924 by James Conn Scott, who was inspired by his family's general store. The business was passed down through three generations before the decision to liquidate was made.

Rosso Furniture & Décor Shuts Down After 47 Years

Another long-time furniture retailer, Rosso Furniture & Décor, has also decided to close its doors after 47 years in business. The company’s stores in Morgan Hill and Gilroy, California, are now undergoing liquidation sales. The Morgan Hill location began its sale on August 14, while the Gilroy outlet had already started its closing sale.

Rosso Furniture & Décor was originally established in San Bernardino, California, in the late 1960s by Jaime Rosso Sr. His sons later opened a store in Gilroy in 1978 and another in Morgan Hill. In 2021, the Rosso family sold their Northern California stores to Melissa O’Malley, a move that came shortly after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Economic Challenges Lead to Permanent Closure

The company cited "ongoing economic challenges" as the reason for its permanent closure. While the specific details were not disclosed, the furniture retail sector has faced several common issues, including rising costs of labor and products due to inflation, higher interest rates, a slowdown in the real estate market, and shifting consumer spending habits.

Despite the closure, the two remaining stores in San Bernardino have a combined showroom space of 70,000 square feet.
