Fresh Perspective on Viral Arrest Reveals Deputy with Gun: Lawyers

New Evidence Reveals Escalated Use of Force in Jacksonville Arrest
A recently released image from body camera footage has shed new light on the arrest of 22-year-old William McNeil, a Black college student in Jacksonville, Florida. According to his attorneys, the incident involved an escalation of force by sheriff’s deputies that was more severe than initially reported. The image, shared by McNeil’s legal team, shows a deputy pointing a gun at McNeil after deputies broke his car window and punched him in the face.
McNeil described the moment as one where he felt completely unsafe. “From the evidence in the picture, I was being held at gunpoint, and I didn’t feel safe,” he said during a press conference. His lawyers, Ben Crump and Harry Daniels, emphasized that this new information adds to the growing concerns about how law enforcement uses force against Black individuals.
The incident is part of a broader pattern of scrutiny surrounding the treatment of Black Americans by law enforcement. Crump highlighted that 63 out of 78 people cited by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for driving without headlights in the past three years have been Black drivers, despite Black residents making up only 15% of the city's population. “This is just a case of driving while Black. It is that simple,” Crump stated.
McNeil had previously shared a video of the traffic stop, which showed deputies beating him after he asked to speak to a supervisor about why he was pulled over. Deputies claimed he was not using his headlights, but McNeil insisted there was no inclement weather and that it was still daylight. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released body camera videos and stated that McNeil did not respond to requests to exit his vehicle. However, they provided little explanation for the violence used against him.
The sheriff’s office has launched an internal investigation into the incident and placed the deputy who punched McNeil on paid administrative leave. They have not yet responded to requests for comment on the image showing the deputy pointing a gun during the traffic stop.
McNeil’s legal team pointed out that the sheriff’s office appears to be selectively releasing body camera footage while withholding other parts of the incident. They noted that only three videos have been disclosed, even though multiple officers were present at the scene.
This case echoes similar incidents involving brutal violence against Black Americans. Crump mentioned that McNeil’s mother expressed relief that her son was not among those like Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, or Ahmaud Arbery. The legal team is calling for the firing of the deputy involved and is working to clear McNeil’s name.
After the traffic stop, McNeil was charged with resisting without violence and driving with a suspended license. His attorneys claim he pleaded guilty while suffering from a concussion caused by the incident. “We’re going to fight to clear his name, exonerate him,” said Sue-Ann Robinson, one of McNeil’s attorneys.
The case continues to spark public outrage and calls for accountability. As more details emerge, the focus remains on the need for transparency and justice in cases involving law enforcement and communities of color.
