Free Meals for All in Livingston County District

Uncertainty Over School Meal Funding in Livingston County
Several districts across Livingston County are waiting for updates from the Michigan Legislature regarding free breakfast and lunch for students. The state has yet to finalize the School Aid Budget for Fiscal Year 2025-26, which officially starts on October 1. This delay has left many school districts in a state of uncertainty about the future of the Michigan School Meals Program, which has provided free meals to public school students since 2023.
Pinckney Community Schools Stands Firm
Pinckney Community Schools has taken a proactive stance, ensuring that free breakfast and lunch will continue for all students regardless of the state’s budget situation. Superintendent Rick Todd explained that the district qualified for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which allows schools in low-income areas to offer meals without charging students. This provision is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service.
Other Districts Await Final Decision
However, not all districts are as certain. Fowlerville, Howell, Hartland, and Brighton are still waiting for clarity on the funding. In Brighton, Superintendent Matthew Outlaw expressed that while all three draft versions of the state budget include funds for school meals, only the version proposed by the Michigan House of Representatives allows local decision-making. Despite this, Outlaw remains optimistic that the final budget will secure continued support for school meals.
“I do expect that, once a final budget is settled, school meals will continue for 2025-26,” Outlaw said.
Hartland Consolidated Schools Takes a Wait-and-See Approach
Hartland Consolidated Schools Superintendent Chuck Hughes addressed the issue during a recent board meeting. He acknowledged that the outcome of the budget negotiations is unclear but stated that the district will continue offering free meals until at least September 30. If the program does not continue, families will be required to pay for meals starting October 1.
The district encourages families to apply for free or reduced-price meals through the Child Nutrition and Education Benefit Application. Applications can be submitted online at sisweb.resa.net/mistar/hartland.
Fowlerville and Howell Schools Prepare for the Worst
Fowlerville Community Schools will also provide free meals to all students through September 30. If funding ends, students who qualify can still receive support through the free and reduced lunch program. FCS urges families to complete the application at fowlervilleschools.org/services/food-and-nutrition.
Superintendent Matt Stuard emphasized that no final decisions have been made regarding free meals beyond September 30, but the district is closely monitoring the situation.
Similarly, Howell Public Schools will continue offering free breakfast and lunch through September 30. If the Michigan School Meals Program doesn’t continue, families will need to begin paying for meals starting October 1. Only students with an approved benefits application will be eligible for free or reduced-price meals at that time.
Howell Schools is encouraging families to apply for assistance online at howellschools.com/food.
A Call for Continued Support
As the Michigan Legislature continues its deliberations, the uncertainty surrounding school meal funding remains a concern for many families. While some districts are committed to maintaining free meals for now, others are preparing for potential changes. The situation highlights the importance of community engagement and advocacy in ensuring that students have access to nutritious meals throughout the school year.
For those seeking more information or assistance, several online portals are available for completing applications and staying informed about upcoming changes. Families are encouraged to take action now to ensure their children’s needs are met, regardless of what the final budget may look like.
