Fox News Viewers Shocked by Guest Blaming NYC Bystanders for Tragedy

The Debate Over Bystander Apathy and Gun Violence
Fox News viewers were left in a state of confusion and frustration after a guest on Sean Hannity’s show suggested that “bystander apathy” played a role in the recent shooting in New York City. The incident, which occurred at 345 Park Avenue—a building housing Blackstone and the NFL—involved a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas named Shane Tamura. He entered the office building around 6:30 p.m. and opened fire with an AR-15 rifle, killing four people before taking his own life.
Hannity and other Fox News hosts dedicated significant time during their Monday night broadcasts to covering the event, highlighting the severity of the attack and its implications. As part of this coverage, Hannity brought on retired NYPD officer Bull Stanton as a guest to discuss the incident.
Stanton’s remarks, however, sparked considerable backlash among viewers. He pointed to images showing Tamura walking into the building with the rifle clearly visible, suggesting that bystanders should have taken more aggressive action to prevent the tragedy. "We see it again," he said, referring to the pattern of violence. "And there's talk of more police officers. There's talk of, you know, more omnipresence...But we need to deputize ourselves."
He continued by addressing Hannity directly, referencing his background in MMA training. "Sean, let's take you as an example. My understanding is you train really hard in MMA. I'm guessing you train with your firearm, as well," he said. After Hannity confirmed this, Stanton added, "We each need to empower ourselves not to be a victim. Bystander apathy is what occurred, is the term used as this gentleman walked—this cretin walked with a long gun down the street."
The suggestion that individuals should take matters into their own hands drew sharp criticism from many viewers. Some argued that skills like MMA would not be effective against an AR-15 rifle. One user wrote, "MMA fighting won't do much against an AR-15." Another joked, "Sure—Sean Hannity would have run up and given him a round kick." Others were more serious, pointing out that Hannity himself might not have been able to intervene effectively. "Hannity would have absolutely ran away," one person commented. "I'm not expecting an elderly lady to disarm a 27-year-old with an assault weapon."
Some viewers also raised concerns about the practicality of Stanton’s advice. They pointed out that Tamura had parked his car directly in front of the building before entering, suggesting that others may have noticed something was wrong. However, they emphasized that safety should come first. "I'm sure lots of people called 911 they sensibly got to safety first," one person noted.
The conversation around the incident has highlighted broader debates about gun violence, public safety, and the role of individuals in preventing such tragedies. While some argue for increased vigilance and personal responsibility, others stress the importance of professional law enforcement and systemic solutions.
As the nation continues to grapple with the rise in violent incidents, the discussion surrounding the New York City shooting serves as a reminder of the complex challenges facing communities across the country. Whether through policy changes, community engagement, or individual preparedness, finding effective ways to address these issues remains a critical priority.
