During a recent episode of The Five, a Fox News panel show, Jessica Tarlov, one of the co-hosts, addressed the tragic mass shooting that occurred in a Manhattan office. The incident resulted in the deaths of four individuals, prompting emotional reactions from both the public and media personalities. As a liberal commentator known for her advocacy of Democratic values, Tarlov used the opportunity to shift the conversation toward gun control reform.

The suspect involved in the New York shooting, Shane Tamura, had been issued a concealed firearms permit by the Las Vegas Police Department and was armed with an assault rifle during the attack. According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura had a documented mental health history, raising concerns about the process that allowed him to obtain a firearm.

Tarlov expressed her distress over the situation and questioned how someone with such a history could have received a concealed carry license. “How did he get a concealed carry license even in Nevada? How are these things happening?” she asked. She emphasized the importance of addressing gun violence, stating, “You will never be able to stop all of the lunatics. But if you stopped this one, we’d have four people that were alive today who certainly deserve to be.”

Her comments aired between 5:11 and 5:13 p.m. EST, and shortly after, President Donald Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his frustration with Tarlov. He labeled her as “a real loser” and called her a “disgrace to television broadcasting.” The Daily Beast has since reached out to the White House for further clarification on Trump’s remarks.

Tarlov also referenced statements made by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who called for stricter gun laws following the tragedy. Hochul highlighted the success of the federal assault weapons ban, which lasted from 1994 to 2004. “We saw a decrease in mass shootings in this country,” Hochul said. “70 percent less likely to happen. And then when the ban sunsetted, it spiked back up.”

This sentiment resonated with Tarlov, who reiterated the effectiveness of the previous ban. She noted that the period without the ban coincided with a rise in mass shootings. Her comments align with broader calls for legislative action on gun control, particularly in light of recent violent incidents.

In addition to discussing gun policy, Tarlov also touched on political issues affecting Trump’s approval ratings. She cited a Wall Street Journal poll indicating a decline in his support, citing backlash over immigration policies. On her X account, she shared a CBS News poll showing a drop in Trump’s favorability, adding, “A lot of movement in the wrong direction for Trump.”

Trump has long been critical of Tarlov, often targeting her on his social media platforms. In October 2023, he referred to her as one of the “Harris Radical Left Democrat mouthpieces” and criticized Fox News for what he described as a loss of journalistic integrity. He previously called her “wacky” and “absolutely terrible,” criticizing her factual accuracy, presentation style, and voice.
