Trump’s Controversial Welcome for Putin Sparks Debate

President Donald Trump has faced significant backlash from critics for his elaborate welcome of Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of their historic summit in Alaska. Despite the criticism, a Fox News presenter defended the gesture, highlighting key details that many viewers might have missed.

Rachel Campos-Duffy, the anchor of Fox and Friends Weekend, pointed out an important nuance during the leaders' meeting at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage. She noted that Trump was acutely aware of how the situation would be perceived. “He's a producer at heart,” she said on the show.

Campos-Duffy emphasized that the first thing she noticed was that Trump made Putin approach him rather than meeting halfway. Additionally, she highlighted the stark contrast in the pathways provided for each leader. “And then, President Trump had this giant red carpet and Putin had this tiny little strip to walk down,” she remarked.

The footage of the encounter clearly showed that Putin’s path was significantly smaller than Trump’s. Campos-Duffy joked, “You had to know that President Trump said, ‘Make sure my red carpet is much bigger than his red carpet.’”

Trump’s dramatic entrance with Putin drew intense criticism from Washington officials. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, expressed his disapproval, stating, “I didn't care for the red-carpet treatment Putin was afforded or the signal Trump sent by welcoming him with applause.” He also noted the surprise surrounding the lack of detail and the unconventional nature of the post-meeting press conference.

Illinois Democrat Mike Quigley criticized Trump for “literally” rolling out the red carpet for Putin, suggesting that the Russian leader received a “green light to continue his conquest.” Social media users echoed similar sentiments, with one X user writing, “Never seen Trump this thrilled to meet any other world leader. Disgusting.” Another user commented, “A red carpet for Putin, the aggressor and war criminal, but nothing for Zelenskyy says a lot about Trump's priorities.”

After the handshake on the tarmac, Trump invited Putin to join him in his vehicle for the trip to their meeting—a gesture that is unusual for a head of state. Despite describing the three-hour meeting as “productive,” Trump informed reporters that no agreement on a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine was reached. “We've made some headway. So there's no deal until there's a deal,” he said.

Upcoming Summit with Ukrainian Leader

Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Monday, alongside several European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“Big day at the White House tomorrow. Never had so many European Leaders at one time,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “My great honor to host them!!!”

Zelensky expressed gratitude for the invitation, stating, “We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably.” The gathering represents a rare display of solidarity for Ukraine, with multiple leaders traveling together on short notice.

Diplomatic sources, speaking to the BBC, have raised concerns that Trump may attempt to pressure Zelensky into agreeing to certain terms after the Ukrainian president was excluded from the Trump-Putin summit. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed these concerns during an interview with CBS, calling the idea of Zelensky being coerced a “stupid media narrative.”
