Flashback: Mamdani Vows to Disband Key Police Unit Handling Mass Shootings

The Aftermath of a Tragic Shooting in Midtown Manhattan
New York City is reeling from a devastating mass shooting that took place in midtown Manhattan, where four people lost their lives, including an NYPD officer. This tragic event has brought renewed attention to the political landscape, particularly focusing on Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral nominee. Mamdani, currently in Uganda celebrating his wedding, has found himself at the center of a debate over policing and public safety.
Mamdani, who has previously advocated for defunding the police, has taken a more measured approach as a mayoral candidate. However, his past stance resurfaced after the shooting, especially regarding his pledge to disband the New York Police Department’s Strategic Response Group (SRG). This unit plays a critical role in handling riots, civil disorder, and large-scale events, according to the NYPD's official website. The SRG is equipped with specialized personnel and tools to manage situations that require a heightened police presence, such as shootings, bank robberies, or demonstrations.
In December 2024, Mamdani made headlines by stating he would disband the SRG, citing its history of costly lawsuits and alleged mistreatment of New Yorkers exercising their First Amendment rights. He claimed that the SRG had been deployed to "harass + arrest striking @teamsters," further fueling the controversy surrounding the unit.
Following the recent shooting, Mamdani expressed his condolences, saying, "I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts." He also acknowledged the efforts of first responders, emphasizing his gratitude for their work on the ground.
The incident occurred when a lone gunman, later identified as Shane Tamura, entered a midtown Manhattan office building and opened fire, killing four individuals before taking his own life. The victims included NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne, and Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but it is reported that Tamura had a grievance with the NFL, blaming the sport for issues related to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition linked to repeated head injuries.
In response to the tragedy, Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for re-election as an independent, ordered all city buildings and flagstaffs to lower their flags to half-staff in honor of Officer Didarul Islam and the other victims. Adams paid tribute to the fallen officer, stating, "Officer Didarul Islam died as he lived, a hero and protector of New York City. We will never forget you."
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for comment but did not receive an immediate response. As the city mourns, the conversation around policing and public safety continues to evolve, with Mamdani’s past statements now under renewed scrutiny. The shooting has sparked a broader discussion about the role of law enforcement in maintaining order and the need for reform in how police respond to crises.
