Behind the Scenes of Disney Cruise Line’s New Hercules Stage Show

Disney Parks recently shared an exclusive behind-the-scenes video that offers a glimpse into the upcoming Hercules stage show on the Disney Destiny cruise ship. The video highlights the iconic number "Zero to Hero" and provides a detailed look at the creative process, costumes, and special effects that will bring the story to life.

The Creative Team and Rehearsal Insights

The video begins with Kevin and Marcel Wilson, the co-directors and choreographers of the show. Filmed in the Disney Cruise Line rehearsal studio in Toronto, it features clips from a live rehearsal of the "Zero to Hero" performance. Alongside the song, the video includes glimpses of costume designs, puppetry, and set pieces used during rehearsals.

The set includes movable platforms with poles and small staircases, which are expected to be more elaborately decorated in the final production. The Muses, portrayed in flowing white garments, were seen standing on platforms resembling Grecian columns, adding to the mythological atmosphere of the show.

Costume Design and Character Looks

During the rehearsal, actors wore color-coded t-shirts instead of their final costumes. Hercules was seen in a red shirt, while the Pegasus performer wore a blue shirt with wings. The Muses all wore yellow, and Phil, the trainer, was in green. Notably, Hercules was also seen wearing his golden medallion during less intense moments of the performance.

The Hades performer was dressed in a blue outfit and wore a wheeled hoop apparatus, which will be covered in his final costume to create a dramatic, billowing effect similar to the animated version. Concept art reveals a fresh take on Hades’ robes, with Pain and Panic in jumpsuits featuring wings and horns. Phil is depicted in furry overalls and bracers, while Meg wears a purple toga with a single shoulder strap. These designs may still evolve before the final show.

Puppetry and Special Effects

The video also showcases larger-than-life puppets, including the Hydra and Titan. Disney Cruise Line previously released a preview of the ice Titan and concept art for the creatures. The Titan puppets utilize the same exoskeleton technology that was used for The Hulk at Disney California Adventure.

Other props featured in the show include a “floating” eyeball and giant scissors held by the Fates. Some performers and Hercules carry fake swords and shields, enhancing the theatrical experience.

Musical Elements and Additional Content

In addition to the original songs from the animated film, the show will include "Shooting Star," a ballad that was cut from the movie but written by Alan Menken and David Zippel. This addition brings a new emotional depth to the performance.

After completing rehearsals in Toronto, the cast will travel to Germany, where the Disney Destiny is under construction, to practice in the Walt Disney Theatre. The ship is scheduled to embark on its maiden voyage from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on November 20, 2025.

A New Addition to the Disney Cruise Line Experience

The Hercules stage show will join other popular productions such as Disney Seas the Adventure and Frozen: A Musical Spectacular, which have already debuted on other Disney Cruise Line ships. This new addition promises to captivate audiences with its blend of music, dance, and stunning visual effects.

For those interested in experiencing the magic of the Disney Destiny, there are opportunities to book cruises through official travel agents. With its unique blend of storytelling and entertainment, the Hercules stage show is sure to become a highlight of the cruise experience.
