Father charged with child abuse and murder in 6-week-old baby's death

Tragic Incident Leads to Arrest of Young Father
A shocking incident in Mesa, Arizona, has led to the arrest of a 19-year-old man accused of causing the death of his six-week-old son. The case has left the community in disbelief and raises serious concerns about child safety and parental responsibility.
Arnold Barney was taken into custody on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse. According to reports, the tragic event occurred when emergency responders were called to an apartment complex on Longmore near Southern Avenue and Alma School Road around 8:30 p.m. on a Monday evening. Upon arrival, officers discovered the infant in severe distress and rushed him to the hospital, where he later passed away early Tuesday.
Medical professionals at the hospital noted that the baby had visible bruising and internal injuries, including a brain bleed. These injuries were consistent with repeated physical trauma, leading to the boy’s untimely death.
Details Emerge from Court Documents
Court records released on Wednesday provided more insight into the events leading up to the tragedy. The child’s mother reported that she left the baby in Arnold Barney’s care while she and other family members went to the grocery store around 7:30 p.m. Before leaving, she placed the infant on their bed, wrapped in a small blanket. When they returned approximately an hour later, Barney was sitting on the couch, and the baby was still in the bedroom, tightly swaddled on the bed.
The mother noticed bruises on the baby’s face and observed that he was struggling to breathe. She immediately called 911, but Barney did not respond when she asked what had happened. According to the court documents, the mother described Barney as unemployed, spending his days playing video games and watching videos on his iPad. She also claimed that Barney would often become angry when she confronted him about his lack of involvement in caring for their two children. He reportedly vented his frustration by punching walls at the home.
Conflicting Accounts and Admission of Guilt
When questioned by police, Barney initially claimed that he was napping on the couch with his son cradled in his arms. He told investigators that he woke up to the sound of crying and believed the baby had rolled onto the floor face-first while he was asleep. However, he later changed his story, admitting that he slapped the child across the face because he wouldn’t stop crying. Despite having changed the baby’s diaper and given him a bottle, Barney reportedly slapped the infant six times before placing him back on the bed and returning to the couch.
Barney expressed remorse to detectives, stating that he wished he could tell the baby’s mother he was “sorry for killing the child.” He was then taken into custody and booked into the Maricopa County jail.
Community Reaction and Emotional Impact
The incident has deeply affected the local neighborhood. One neighbor, Jesus Anaya, who is expecting his third child, described witnessing the emergency responders carrying the newborn out of the apartment. “You could tell it was a newborn, it was really small,” he said. Anaya shared how the tragedy hit close to home, as he is due to have a baby in November. “To think if something happened to my baby, it would destroy me,” he added.
John Delatorre, a forensic psychologist, commented on the emotional toll this incident may have on the community. “They’re always supposed to be there, kind of always protecting the family and always, you know, kind of be the masculine man that can solve every problem. And when they aren’t that, it can lead to a level of stress,” he said.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible parenting and the need for support systems to help families in crisis.
