Marvel's Fantastic Four Makes a Strong Debut at the Box Office

Marvel Studios has finally hit the jackpot with its latest superhero film, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” The movie opened with an impressive $118 million in North American theaters during its first weekend, playing in 4,125 locations. This performance places it as the fourth-largest opening of the year, following “A Minecraft Movie,” “Lilo & Stitch,” and “Superman.” It also marks the biggest Marvel opening since “Deadpool & Wolverine” grossed $211 million last summer.

Globally, the film earned an additional $100 million from 52 territories, bringing its worldwide debut to $218 million. These numbers align with what the studio had anticipated, indicating a strong start for the film.

The success of “First Steps” comes on the heels of another major superhero reboot, James Gunn’s “Superman,” which opened three weekends ago and has already crossed the $500 million global mark. While “Superman” took second place with $24.9 million domestically, the box office success of both films suggests that concerns about superhero fatigue may be unfounded.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore, commented on the trend, saying, “The whole notion of superhero fatigue, which has been talked about a lot, can I think be put to rest. I always say it’s bad movie fatigue, not superhero fatigue.”

A New Era for the Fantastic Four

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is the latest attempt to bring the iconic superhuman family to the big screen. Previous versions of the film have struggled to capture the public’s imagination, but this new adaptation, based on the original Marvel comics, has taken a different approach. Set in a retro-futuristic world of the 1960s, the film follows the story of the four astronauts who gained powers after exposure to cosmic rays during a space mission.

The team consists of:

  • Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) – Who can stretch his body to incredible lengths.
  • Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) – Who can render herself invisible.
  • Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) – Who transforms into a fiery human torch.
  • Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) – Who possesses tremendous superhuman strength with his stone-like flesh.

The film takes place four years after the family gained their powers, showing how Reed’s inventions have transformed technology and how Sue’s diplomacy has led to global peace. Both audiences and critics have responded positively to the film, which currently holds an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Exit polls from opening weekend ticket buyers also show promising results, with 46% of audiences choosing to watch the film on premium screens, including IMAX and other large formats.

Rebuilding Marvel’s Momentum

Marvel has been working to rebuild audience enthusiasm for its films and characters after a few underwhelming releases this year. While its previous offerings didn’t reach the heights of “Deadpool & Wolverine” or the “Avengers” era, the critical reception of recent films has shown an upward trend. For example, “Thunderbolts,” which kicked off the summer movie season, was better received critically but financially capped out at just over $382 million globally.

The Fantastic Four characters had long been under the banner of 20th Century Fox before Disney’s $71 billion acquisition of Fox’s entertainment assets in 2019. Prior attempts to bring the team to the big screen, such as those in the mid-2000s featuring Chris Evans as the Human Torch, were met with mixed reviews but decent profits. In 2015, a second attempt with Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller failed to resonate with audiences.

Despite some lower-than-expected projections, “First Steps” is expected to keep movie theater earnings strong well into August.

Other Box Office Highlights

While “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” dominated the top spot, holdovers continued to feature heavily in the top 10. Another newcomer, the dark romantic comedy “Oh, Hi!,” managed to make the chart with $1.1 million from 866 screens.
