The Return of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and the New Fan Theories

The 1997 slasher film "I Know What You Did Last Summer" has made a comeback with a new sequel, released on July 18. This time around, the story brings back some familiar faces from the original cast, including Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt, who reprise their iconic roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James, respectively. Alongside them are new stars like Madelyn Cline, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Chase Sui Wonders, creating a mix of nostalgia and fresh energy for fans.

Despite the return of the original actors, a recent social media post sparked debate among fans. A user on X questioned whether Prinze Jr. and Hewitt actually filmed their scenes together in the new movie. They pointed out what they described as “cuts and separate shots,” suggesting that the two might not have shared the screen. However, the director of the reboot, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, quickly addressed the speculation.

“They absolutely shot their scenes together. Hope this helps,” she wrote on X with a heart emoji. The original poster later apologized to the filmmaker, expressing embarrassment over the confusion. Robinson responded by saying no apology was needed, adding that she understood why people might think that due to the coverage, but emphasized that the actors were indeed working off each other.

Reconnecting After Decades

Although Prinze Jr. and Hewitt filmed their scenes together, the actor revealed he hadn’t seen Hewitt since the 1998 sequel, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” He explained that they now run in different circles. However, both actors expressed a deep connection to their characters and the impact of the films.

“We care a lot about these characters, and it was all still there,” Prinze Jr. told Variety. He praised the director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, for bringing depth to the characters and highlighted the emotional significance of their first scene together in the new film.

Prinze Jr. is married to his co-star from the original film, Sarah Michelle Gellar, with whom he shares two children. Hewitt, meanwhile, is married to Brian Hallisay, her co-star from “The Client List,” and they have three children together. Despite their marriages, rumors of a long-standing feud between Hewitt and Gellar have circulated online.

Addressing the Rumors

Hewitt recently addressed the speculation about her relationship with Gellar, stating that she hasn't kept in touch since the original film. She told Vulture, “I honestly don’t even know what that was or how that all came to be.” She expressed confusion over why people would assume a conflict existed, noting that they haven’t spoken since meeting at 18 years old when the first movie came out.

Gellar also commented on the rumors after not posing for photos with Hewitt on the red carpet. She explained that she was with her kids during the event and didn’t get to meet the rest of the cast. She clarified that her absence had nothing to do with any personal issues and that she still thinks highly of the cast members.

Hewitt also confirmed that the original cast got along well during filming. She expressed admiration for Prinze Jr. and Gellar, calling it “the cutest thing in the world” that they’ve been married for so long and have children. She found the online speculation amusing and noted that it’s all just part of the entertainment industry.

A Positive Experience on Set

This time around, Prinze Jr. said the experience was just as rewarding. He described the set as feeling like a high school union, where everyone was excited to show their growth and talent. “You hope they notice it,” he told People. “It was all those things.”

With the new sequel, the cast and crew have managed to bring back the essence of the original while introducing fresh elements. Fans can expect a blend of nostalgia and new storytelling, keeping the legacy of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” alive.
