Bryton James, best known for his role as Richie Crawford on the iconic sitcom Family Matters, has a unique idea for bringing the classic show back to life. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, James revealed that he’s been working on a plan to transform the beloved series into an animated format. This approach would allow the show to be modernized and reimagined for a new generation while still honoring its roots.

James has been exploring this concept for some time, and he shared that he's made significant progress. He mentioned that he's already lined up a production company to help finance the project and brought in key players, including Jaleel White, who played the infamous Steve Urkel. However, the project is currently in the hands of Warner Bros., and James admits it's still in the early stages.

A source from Warner Bros. Animation confirmed that they are aware of James’ interest in a reboot, but the project hasn’t moved beyond initial discussions. Representatives from Warner Bros. TV did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The Legacy of Family Matters

Family Matters originally aired from 1989 to 1998, offering a heartwarming look at the lives of the Winslow family, a middle-class Black household living in Chicago. The show played a crucial role in launching the careers of several actors, including Reginald VelJohnson, Jaleel White, and Bryton James himself.

Over the years, some members of the original cast have passed away, including Michelle Thomas and Rosetta LeNoire. Despite these losses, James says it wasn’t difficult to get the remaining cast members on board with his reboot idea. He credits a 2018 reunion for reconnecting him with many of his former co-stars.

James maintains close relationships with several cast members, including Telma Hopkins, Darius McCrary, and Kellie Shanygne Williams. He also stays in touch with Jaleel White, whom he describes as a mentor. These connections have helped keep the spirit of Family Matters alive, even as the world around it has changed.

Why Animation?

James chose the animated route over a traditional live-action reboot, citing the show’s blend of humor and fantasy. He recalled memorable moments like Steve Urkel creating a tornado in the kitchen, which he believes could be easily adapted into an animated format. By using animation, the cast wouldn’t need to gather in one place for filming, and they could simply voice their characters again.

This approach also allows for creative freedom, especially when it comes to portraying the show’s more fantastical elements. James joked that Jaleel White wouldn’t have to wear the iconic outfit anymore, but the core essence of the show would remain intact.

Jaleel White’s Perspective

Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel, had previously turned down a different reboot pitch. In his 2024 memoir, Growing Up Urkel, White explained that he rejected a proposal that would have seen Urkel and Laura get married and have a child. He felt the script would have been too similar to the original and that the show’s dynamics no longer fit the modern world.

Instead, White proposed a semi-autobiographical series about a young actor playing Steve Urkel, exploring the challenges of fame and growing up in the 1990s. This idea never materialized, but it shows how complex the process of reviving a classic show can be.

A Fresh Take on a Classic

Despite the challenges, James remains optimistic about his animated vision for Family Matters. He believes there are fans who would be interested in seeing the show reborn in a new, fresh way. His goal is to honor the legacy of the original while making it relevant for today’s audiences.

As the idea continues to develop, it remains to be seen whether Warner Bros. will take the next step. For now, James is keeping the conversation going, hoping to bring Family Matters back to life in a way that resonates with both old and new fans alike.
