A Life of Service and Legacy

Ray Firmani, a World War II veteran who dedicated his life to serving his country and community, passed away at the age of 103. Known as a Delaware treasure, his life story is one of resilience, kindness, and unwavering dedication.

Mitch Topal, a close friend and biographer of Firmani, expressed the deep impact the veteran had on those around him. "He's going to be missed. I'm still getting my head around him not going to be around," Topal shared. His words reflect the profound sense of loss felt by many who knew Firmani.

Firmani called Delaware home for nearly a century and was among the state’s longest-living World War II veterans. His legacy extends beyond his military service, as he was known for his ability to spread goodwill and make friends wherever he went. "Ray was an incredible man. He spread goodwill everywhere he went and he made friends everywhere he went," Topal said.

Born on September 19, 1921, to Italian immigrants, Firmani attended Wilmington High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. As a B-17 pilot, he completed 25 bombing missions over Germany and France, often leading his crew through dangerous and challenging situations. "Most of these missions were eight to 12 hours long, going into Germany dropping bombs on a target, turning around, coming back," Topal explained. "I probably got to know him better than anybody because I chronicled his life; I was his biographer."

Topal documented Firmani's heroism and life story in his book, Against All Odds: The Ray Firmani Story. This work shed light on the experiences of a man who remained private about his military past until the book was published. Melody Firmani, his daughter-in-law, shared how surprising it was to learn about her father-in-law’s wartime contributions. "We didn't learn about his military experiences until the book came out. We were very surprised," she said.

After the war, Firmani built a family and pursued a career as an award-winning photographer. He worked with the DuPont Company until retiring in 1986. Despite being a private person, his community recognized his contributions and impact. Melody described him as a good dad who was loved by many people in his community. "What struck me is he taught himself everything. In his 80s, he taught himself how to use a computer. He had no technological background; he learned by reading," she added.

Even in his later years, Firmani remained active and engaged. Nearly two months before his passing, CBS News Philadelphia spoke with the 103-year-old veteran. "Maybe I'll see you for my birthday," he joked during the conversation. His humor and positivity were evident even in his final days.

Firmani's contributions were acknowledged through various honors. He was inducted into the Delaware Aviation Hall of Fame, honored by the Town of Elsmere as a hometown hero, and a scholarship was established in his name at Delaware Technical Community College. These tributes reflect the lasting impact he had on his community and state.

Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until Monday to honor Firmani's lifetime of service. In a statement released after his passing, Meyer praised Firmani’s dedication. "Ray Firmani was a true Delawarean who served his community and his country with honor. He was a part of the fabric of Elsmere and counseled generations of Delaware leaders. If we are indeed a state of neighbors, then Ray Firmani set the bar that we should all aspire to reach. Lauren and I are sending our deepest condolences and prayers to his entire family and everyone who called Ray a friend. His life was long, but his memory will last even longer."

Topal reflected on the depth of Firmani's influence. "He put his mark on so many people, thousands of people, and everyone he met, he became instant friends with; he's just that kind of a guy," he said. Firmani's life serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the power of kindness, service, and perseverance.
