Community Rallies for Justice in Deportation Cases

In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a group of concerned citizens, family members, and local advocates came together to express their frustration and demand justice for two individuals facing deportation. The protest took place at the federal courthouse, where dozens of people gathered to march and call for action regarding the removal of Pascual Pedro and the detention of Noel Lopez.

Pascual Pedro, a resident of West Liberty, was deported earlier this month after attending a routine check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). His case has sparked outrage among community members who believe he was denied his right to a fair trial. Father Guillermo Trevino, who served as Pedro’s confirmation sponsor, emphasized the importance of due process and the need for government officials to intervene.

“We want him back. We want to bring him back. We’ve been trying to get our elected officials’ attention, especially our senators and representatives, to get here and to meet with me and the family personally to bring Pascal Pedro back,” said Trevino during the protest. He expressed his ongoing efforts to work with Pedro’s family and seek answers regarding the circumstances of his deportation.

Trevino highlighted that Pedro was not given proper legal representation or due process, which led to his removal from the country. He urged lawmakers to take action and support the community’s demands.

“We’re challenging our senators and representatives. They can bring him back; they’ve been inactive, but you see, you hear the honks, the people’s chants. And so no, it is possible, but they have to step up and help us,” he added.

The community continues to push for change, believing that the power of the people, along with the support of local representatives, can make a difference. Trevino stated that he will not stop fighting until Pedro is brought back home.

“With the power of the people, the power of our representatives, the power of our senators, they can bring him back,” Trevino said. “If you want to get rid of me, just bring him home and I’ll shut up, you know? So I’m still going to be here.”

According to Trevino, Pedro is currently with his mother in Guatemala and is eager to return to the United States. He plans to speak about his experience during an online press conference on Wednesday, sharing his story and calling for greater awareness and support.

In addition to Pedro’s case, the protest also focused on the situation of Noel Lopez, a Muscatine resident who was detained after being a passenger in a traffic stop. His sister explained that a warrant for his arrest was issued following the incident, raising concerns about the legal process and treatment of immigrants in the area.

Community members are urging lawmakers to address these cases and ensure that individuals like Pedro and Lopez receive fair treatment under the law. They are seeking direct engagement with elected officials to discuss potential solutions and advocate for policy changes that protect the rights of all residents.

Senator Chuck Grassley’s office responded to the situation by stating that his staff in Cedar Rapids agreed to meet with Iowans interested in cases involving Pedro and Lopez. After a large crowd gathered outside the office, Grassley’s staff invited family members to meet with them personally to hear their concerns.

Senator Joni Ernst also addressed the issue, emphasizing the importance of laws in keeping Iowans safe. She noted that the cases are being reviewed and expressed gratitude for President Trump’s leadership in upholding the law.
