A Symbolic Protest: Mock Wedding for Hostage Matan Zangauker

On a rainy Sunday, a symbolic and emotional event took place at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, where a mock wedding was held to honor former hostage Ilana Gritzewsky and her partner, Matan Zangauker. While Gritzewsky was released in November 2023, Matan remains in the captivity of Hamas, sparking nationwide protests and strikes against the government’s decision to expand the war in Gaza.

The ceremony was part of a larger daylong demonstration that aimed to draw attention to the plight of the remaining 50 hostages still held in Gaza. The protest coincided with ongoing tensions following the breakdown of negotiations to secure their release. The event served as a powerful reminder of the deep emotional and personal stakes involved in the conflict.

Gritzewsky, dressed in a white wedding dress and veil, walked beneath a chuppah—a traditional Jewish wedding canopy—toward the main stage. She was accompanied by John Polin, the father of murdered hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin. Alongside him were other grieving fathers, including Yehudah Cohen, Michel Illouz, and Yitzhak Horn, who each represented a lost loved one. Together, they held the canopy aloft, symbolizing the collective grief and determination of families affected by the conflict.

Matan Zangauker’s mother, Einav Zangauker, stood beside Gritzewsky under the chuppah, holding a poster of her son. Gritzewsky addressed Matan directly, saying, “I love you. I’m fighting for you until you and all of the hostages are back. We’ll bring you back alive. We’ll heal together.” Her words echoed the sentiments of many families who have endured unimaginable pain and uncertainty.

Gritzewsky has become one of the most vocal advocates for the hostages, sharing her harrowing experiences during her captivity. In a March interview with The New York Times, she described waking up half-naked, surrounded by gunmen after being taken hostage. Her testimony highlights the brutal realities faced by those captured during the October 7 attacks.

The mock wedding was not without its challenges. Shortly after the ceremony concluded, missile alert sirens sounded, prompting attendees to take cover. A missile fired from Yemen was intercepted, and no injuries or damage were reported. Despite the tension, the event continued with unwavering resolve.

The protests extended beyond Hostages Square, with thousands of demonstrators blocking roads and highways across the country. Hundreds of local authorities, businesses, universities, and tech companies participated in the strike, demanding an end to the war and the return of the remaining hostages. The demonstrations reflected widespread public frustration with the ongoing conflict and the lack of progress in securing the release of those still held captive.

While the Histadrut, Israel’s central labor union, did not join the strike, its leader, Arnon Bar-David, visited Hostages Square to express solidarity with the protesters. President Isaac Herzog also made a visit, addressing the crowd and emphasizing the unity of the Israeli people in their desire for the return of all hostages.

“There’s no Israeli who doesn’t want them back home,” he said. “We can argue about philosophies, but truly, the people of Israel want our brothers and sisters back home.”

As of now, Hamas is holding 50 hostages, including 49 of the 251 abducted in the October 7 attack. At least 28 of these hostages are confirmed dead, while 20 are believed to be alive. There are serious concerns for the well-being of two others. Additionally, Hamas holds the body of an IDF soldier killed in Gaza in 2014.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with the Hamas-run health ministry reporting over 60,000 deaths in the Strip. However, this figure cannot be independently verified and does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The mock wedding and the broader protests serve as a poignant reminder of the human cost of the conflict and the urgent need for resolution. Families continue to fight for the return of their loved ones, hoping for a future where they can be reunited and healed.
