Ex-Student Athlete Leader Charged with Embezzling School Funds

Allegations of Embezzlement by Former Athletic Facilitator
A former athletic facilitator for Moore Public Schools is now facing serious legal consequences after being charged with embezzlement. According to court records, Courtney Raegan Walker, who previously worked as the athletic facilitator at Moore High School, is accused of stealing nearly $61,000 in ticket sales. The charges were filed on August 15 in Cleveland County District Court, and she faces six felony counts of embezzlement.
According to a court affidavit, Walker reportedly told school administrators that she gambled away the money. This revelation came after an investigation was launched following a report from the school district about potential financial misconduct. The case has raised concerns about the handling of funds associated with various school events.
The investigation began on July 1 when Moore police received a report regarding possible embezzlement. Walker, 50, had been employed by the district since July 2022 and resigned last month. The affidavit details several incidents that led investigators to suspect her involvement in the misappropriation of funds.
One of the first incidents involved a girls basketball event hosted by the Lady Lions Swish Club at Moore High School in August 2024. The club was promised $7,000 for its assistance, but investigators allege that Walker collected the funds and never returned them to either the club or the district. Multiple attempts to retrieve the money were unsuccessful.
During the 2024-25 school year, Moore High School partnered with the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) to host four events that Walker oversaw. These events included:
- A volleyball tournament in October that generated approximately $13,000.
- A cheer event that brought in $20,000.
- A winter regional basketball tournament that produced $7,000.
- A spring track meet that gathered $10,000.
Investigators claim that none of these funds were deposited into the district’s account. Additionally, an estimated $4,000 from a 7-on-7 spring football league also went unaccounted for.
When confronted by district officials, Walker admitted that she no longer had the money and had spent it on gambling. The total estimated loss from these incidents is approximately $61,000.
Moore Public Schools issued a statement to The Oklahoman, confirming that they became aware of the alleged misappropriation of funds during the summer. The statement noted that the district immediately reported the incident to the Moore Police Department and notified the Oklahoma State Department of Education and OSSAA. Walker was placed on administrative leave pending a full investigation and later resigned from her position.
The school district emphasized that this is an active police investigation and that they will continue to cooperate with law enforcement as needed. An internal investigation is also ongoing.
If convicted, Walker could face significant fines and potential prison time. As of now, no attorney has been listed on court documents, and efforts to contact her directly have yielded no response.
This case highlights the importance of financial oversight in educational institutions and raises questions about how such mismanagement can occur. It also underscores the need for transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds.
