New Candidate Enters Sioux Falls Mayoral Race

A new chapter is about to begin in Sioux Falls City Hall as the current mayor, Paul TenHaken, completes his eighth and final term. With the upcoming election, a fresh administration will take over, and several candidates are vying for the position. Among them is Christine Erickson, a former lawmaker and city councilor who recently announced her candidacy.

Erickson's decision to run comes after former mayoral candidate David Zokaites and state lawmaker Jamie Smith had already entered the race. However, Erickson’s announcement at a special event in Sioux Falls has drawn attention due to her extensive background in public service and business.

Known for her work in the South Dakota legislature from 2013 to 2022, Erickson also served as an at-large City Councilor. Her career includes leadership roles in organizations such as the South Dakota Trucking and Auto Dealers Associations. She emphasizes that her experience as a small business owner and public servant will help her stand out among other candidates.

“I won’t be chasing headlines or sending out press releases every time something goes right,” Erickson said. “I’ve always worked quietly and gotten things done for our community.”

One of the major issues facing the next mayor is the potential construction of a new prison in Sioux Falls. Erickson shared her perspective on this challenge, acknowledging that no one wants a prison near their home but recognizing its necessity.

“While it’s not ideal, we have to ensure it’s a safe place for prisoners, a safe environment for employees, and provide support for those returning to the community,” she explained. Her top priority, if elected, would be to keep Sioux Falls safe while promoting economic growth and job opportunities.

Erickson believes that Sioux Falls is a secure city, but maintaining that safety requires proactive measures. She praised the current administration for its efforts in combating crime and supporting law enforcement. However, she emphasized the need to build on these efforts, especially with the upcoming challenges related to the prison project.

Property taxes have been a growing concern for many residents, and Erickson has acknowledged these worries. She noted that her own property taxes have increased significantly in recent years. As a city councilor, she helped implement changes to assist disabled and low-income seniors with property tax refunds.

“We made strides in this area and were forward-thinking,” she said. “As a candidate, I want to continue working on solutions that address these concerns.”

Erickson’s campaign highlights her track record of delivering results rather than just making promises. She shared a story about her time as a legislator when she worked with auto dealers to reduce bureaucratic hurdles. This effort, though not widely publicized, had a significant impact on local businesses.

“Many people don’t realize how much that meant to those businesses,” Erickson recalled. “It was a big deal for them, and it’s just one example of what I’ve been able to accomplish.”

As the 2026 election approaches, Erickson aims to bring her experience, dedication, and practical approach to the role of mayor. Her campaign seeks to emphasize her ability to lead with transparency, collaboration, and a focus on real-world solutions for the people of Sioux Falls.
