James Comey Finds Solace in Taylor Swift’s Music

Former FBI Director James Comey has found an unexpected way to cope with the intense political climate and his personal disagreements with former President Donald Trump. In a recent video, he shared that he has turned to the music of pop icon Taylor Swift as a source of inspiration and emotional support.

Comey, who has been vocal about his criticism of Trump, admitted that he has struggled with the aggressive tactics used by some Democrats, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom. He believes that Swift's more measured and graceful approach is something worth emulating.

In the video, which was posted on his Substack page, Comey reflected on how Swift handles criticism and negativity. He mentioned her appearance on the “New Heights” podcast with the Kelce brothers, where she spoke about dealing with online trolls. One of her statements particularly resonated with him: "Think of your energy as if it’s expensive." This advice, he said, has helped him focus on maintaining his own mental well-being without letting others' actions affect him.

Trump had previously made headlines by commenting on Taylor Swift's appearance, stating that she is "no longer hot" and comparing her to actress Sydney Sweeney. However, Comey sees this as a distraction from what Swift truly represents — her talent, her music, and her ability to remain composed in the face of adversity.

Swift has been politically active, endorsing both former President Joe Biden in 2020 and Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election cycle. Trump, on the other hand, once famously declared, "I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT," claiming that his comments negatively impacted her popularity. Despite this, Comey insists that he has a long-standing admiration for Swift, even though they have never met in person.

"I went to my first concert of hers 15 years ago," Comey said. "And I have helped financially support the attendance of a lot of family members and others. I’m in a family Swiftie group chat. I know all her music."

He also revealed that his favorite songs by Swift are a tie between "All Too Well" and "Exile." For Comey, these tracks represent not only musical brilliance but also a message of resilience and grace.

The former FBI director has often spoken about the challenges of standing up to bullies without allowing their negativity to influence his own behavior. He pointed to California Governor Newsom's satirical posts mocking Trump as an example of how some people respond to political opponents. While he finds these posts amusing, he also worries about the potential for America to become more like Trump and his supporters.

Swift, known for writing songs that reflect on her past relationships, has often addressed themes of heartbreak and betrayal. However, Comey believes that her music teaches the importance of showing kindness and forgiveness, even in difficult situations.

At one of his early concerts, Swift performed a song that directly addressed the issue of being mean to others. Comey recalled how she spoke to the audience, saying, "I bet you got pushed around. Somebody made you cold, but the cycle ends right now." This message, he said, has stayed with him and reminded him that no one should have power over us.

Comey, who was fired by Trump in 2017, has remained a prominent critic of the former president. His career has been marked by several controversial moments, including an Instagram post that sparked a Secret Service investigation. The post featured seashells arranged to spell out "8647," a number that some interpreted as a reference to Trump. Comey denied any malicious intent and later deleted the post.

Recently, his daughter, Maurene, was fired from the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office by the Trump administration. Meanwhile, Comey is believed to be under investigation by the Justice Department.

Despite these challenges, Comey continues to find strength in Taylor Swift's music, using her wisdom as a guide through the turbulent world of politics and public life.
