European Leaders Join Zelensky in Washington for Key Talks with Trump

European leaders are set to travel to Washington, D.C., alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting aims to reinforce a unified front in response to Russia’s efforts to shape the terms of peace in the ongoing conflict. The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Finland, the European Union, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will join Zelensky at the White House.

Zelensky arrived in Brussels on Sunday to meet with Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, and held a video call with other European leaders to prepare for the upcoming discussions with Trump. During his visit, Zelensky emphasized the importance of European unity, stating that it is crucial for the continent to remain as united now as it was during the initial stages of Russia's invasion in 2022.

“It’s very important that you are with us and that we speak to America together,” Zelensky said, standing beside von der Leyen. “This unity really helps encourage real peace, and it must stay strong.”

Zelensky also expressed gratitude to Trump for his recent statements regarding potential security guarantees for Ukraine. However, he noted that there are still no clear details about how these guarantees would function or what roles the U.S. and Europe would play in the process. “This is our main task: We need security to work in practice,” he said.

Focus on Security Guarantees

Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted that one of the major topics during the talks will be security guarantees, including the potential role the U.S. might play. “A lot of it will be centered around what are the kinds of security guarantees that Ukraine is looking for,” Rubio told Fox News. He emphasized that the U.S. needs to finalize the details of the proposal before presenting it to Russia.

Special Envoy Steve Witkoff suggested that the security guarantees could be modeled after Article V of the NATO treaty, which states that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. However, he clarified that these assurances would not come directly from NATO but from individual member states. “That is big,” Witkoff said, noting that the U.S. and other European countries could potentially offer such guarantees.

Pressure on Zelensky to Accept Russian Terms

European officials expect Zelensky to face pressure from Trump to accept a deal outlined by Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting in Alaska. According to reports, the proposal involves Ukraine withdrawing from and surrendering parts of the eastern Donbas region, including portions of Donetsk that it currently controls. In return, Russia would freeze the conflict along the current contact line in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

The officials stated that Zelensky’s primary challenge will be to convince Trump that there are alternative options for achieving a swift end to the war. If Zelensky simply rejects Putin’s demands, it could lead to renewed tensions between him and Trump. This concern is heightened by past incidents, such as the shouting match between Zelensky and Trump during his February visit to the White House.

Upholding Ukraine’s Sovereignty

Zelensky and European leaders have consistently emphasized that Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereign choices must be respected in any peace negotiations. While European officials acknowledge that Ukraine may not regain all of its territory, they stress that Russian occupation should be minimized and never legally recognized as part of Russia.

Zelensky pointed out that Ukraine’s constitution prohibits the surrender of territory or land. He noted that any cession of land controlled by Russia’s military would likely face significant domestic opposition. “Putin has many demands, but we do not know all of them,” Zelensky said. He stressed the need for a cease-fire to allow for meaningful negotiations, followed by a quick resolution to the conflict.
