The Unlikely Hero: A Decade-Long Journey with a Shiny Magikarp

In the vast and ever-expanding world of video games, countless players have taken on monumental challenges. But few stories are as unique and fascinating as that of Leomon, a dedicated gamer from Japan who embarked on an extraordinary quest.

This tale began in October 2011 when Leomon started what many would consider a ludicrous challenge: to complete Pokémon Ruby using only a Shiny Magikarp, one of the weakest Pokémon in the entire franchise. His determination was unmatched, and he was willing to face any odds to achieve his goal.

The initial hurdle was capturing a Shiny Magikarp, which has an incredibly rare chance of appearing—only 1 in 8192. During the preparation phase alone, Leomon spent over a month, culminating in over 353 hours of gameplay and the capture of an astounding 39,416 Magikarp before finally securing that coveted Shiny. The true challenge, however, was just beginning.

With no offensive moves to speak of except for the infamous Splash, which does nothing in battle, Leomon faced a significant hurdle. He had to raise his Magikarp to level 15 to learn Tackle, the first damaging move available to him. Until then, his only option was to use Struggle, a desperate attack that depletes the user’s health. Training his Magikarp turned into an arduous process, requiring 40 uses of Splash to exhaust its PP before transitioning to Struggle. It was a grind that tested the limits of patience and determination.

As he progressed, a myriad of challenges continued to emerge. The grind to level up his Magikarp turned into a saga of trials and tribulations, with the player constantly battling wild Pokémon and imposing gym leaders. In June 2013, after nearly two years of relentless effort, Leomon reached a breaking point and temporarily abandoned the challenge.

Yet, in a twist of fate, Leomon returned to his challenge three years later in 2016. With renewed vigor, he tackled the monumental task of beating the Elite Four, an iconic set of formidable opponents in the Pokémon universe. His journey took another year, filled with strategic battles and a deep understanding of his beloved Magikarp. He confronted the Elite Four for over three months, gradually overcoming obstacle after obstacle, and at last, he achieved what many would deem impossible: he completed Pokémon Ruby using only a Shiny Magikarp.

Leomon’s story is a wild ride through the highs and lows of gaming, a testament to perseverance in the face of unreasonable odds. While many players seek glory through straightforward victories, Leomon’s journey highlights a different kind of achievement—one steeped in frustration and sheer willpower. He embodies the very spirit of gaming, where the journey can often be more significant than the destination.

A Legend in StarCraft: Wang Ruodu’s Dual Path

Switching gears, we move on to another remarkable player, Wang Ruodu, a legend in the StarCraft community known for his impressive skills. His passion for the game earned him recognition in local internet cafes as early as 2000. Balancing school and gaming proved to be an uphill battle, but his passion for StarCraft only grew.

Just months before his college entrance exams, Wang Ruodu shocked classmates by announcing he would return to school full-time. Following his exams, he dedicated just three months to studying and miraculously gained admission to Peking University. His journey didn’t stop there; he became an esteemed player in various competitions, snagging titles in the Chinese StarCraft university championships and performing well in the World Cyber Games.

However, he faced the dual pressures of academia and competition, leading to setbacks in his studies. Remarkably, just three months before his graduate entrance exams, he once again focused solely on his studies and excelled, achieving top scores in his department. His dedication didn’t go unnoticed, as he claimed second place in the WCG Beijing division without intensive training.

Wang Ruodu’s gaming prowess continued to shine after completing his education, as he secured a doctorate from Georgia Tech, one of the top three engineering schools in the United States. Even after transitioning into academia, he managed to climb to the top ranks of StarCraft, proving that true talent shines through, no matter the circumstances.

Conquering the Hardest Boss: Xilin’s Triumph

Lastly, we introduce the final player on our list, Xilin, who encountered perhaps the most challenging boss in gaming history, showcasing his resilience. Game developers often create unique challenges, but none could rival the formidable foes presented by Cave, a company known for its notoriously difficult STG (shoot ’em up) games.

After releasing several successful titles in the genre, they introduced what many gamers deemed impossible—the sacred boss, Yinfeng. Players found themselves overwhelmed by Yinfeng’s barrage of fire, leading many to believe that defeating him was an unattainable feat. Yet, on December 27, 2021, Xilin emerged victorious, albeit using the practice mode. The success stirred the gaming community, igniting debates about the legitimacy of using such methods to defeat a boss.

With skill and a strategic setup, Xilin managed to replicate his success in combat, proving that he could conquer Yinfeng in a real match. On June 7, 2022, he solidified his place in gaming history by defeating Yinfeng again, showcasing his dedication and skill.

Leomon, Wang Ruodu, and Xilin each exemplify the uniquely diverse experiences of gamers who take on monumental challenges. Whether through anticlimactic ventures or the pursuit of gaming glory, these tales enrich the tapestry of gaming lore. Their stories remind us that behind every player lies a journey filled with trials, triumphs, and, ultimately, a shared love for the game. Dive into their adventures, and you may find inspiration to forge your path in the gaming world!
