Elise Stefanik Harassed by Protesters in Her District

A Hostile Reception for a Prominent GOP Figure
Rep. Elise Stefanik, a prominent member of the Republican Party and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, faced a difficult moment during an event in her home district. At a ceremony honoring a late Clinton County clerk in Plattsburgh, a small town near the Canadian border, she was met with boos and jeers from the audience.
The New York congresswoman, who is also seen as a potential candidate for governor, was confronted by protesters while giving remarks at the event. Video footage captured the crowd's strong reaction as she stepped up to the podium. The audience shouted phrases such as “You sold us out,” “Shame,” and “Unseal the Epstein files,” along with continuous boos that made it hard for her to be heard.
Stefanik managed to speak for less than a minute before leaving the podium. She returned for a second attempt but was again met with a wave of boos. According to local NBC affiliate NBC 5, more than half of the attendees were protesters, many of whom held signs criticizing Stefanik for supporting Trump’s policies and for allegedly avoiding meetings with constituents.
Stefanik later condemned the protesters for turning the event into a political spectacle. She emphasized that the ceremony was meant to honor the legacy of John Zurlo, a longtime clerk who passed away at the age of 86. In a statement after the event, she criticized the “far left” for their actions, calling it a disgrace that they focused on politics rather than respecting the family’s loss.
In a follow-up post on X, Stefanik further criticized what she called “radical Far Left Democrat agitators” for attempting to silence a non-political event. However, some protesters expressed frustration with her lack of engagement with the community.
Mavis Agnew, one of the protesters, told the TV station that the ceremony was the first opportunity they had to express their dissatisfaction with Stefanik in months. She claimed that the congresswoman avoids holding town halls and does not take questions from constituents. Agnew added that Stefanik rarely appears in her office.
Despite her efforts to distance herself from constituent backlash, Stefanik is part of a growing trend among Republicans facing criticism from voters. Many are frustrated with Trump and the GOP’s agenda, including recent legislative actions such as the Department of Government Efficiency’s sweeping cuts and the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill.”
The GOP’s massive spending bill, which Stefanik supported, has increased the deficit while cutting over $1.1 trillion from Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act. These cuts could impact healthcare services in New York’s rural North Country region, where Plattsburgh is located, according to reports from the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.
Jesse Murnane, another protester, told NBC 5 that the issue is not about party lines but about the shared impact of these policies. He highlighted the potential effects on rural hospitals and clinics, such as Hudson Headwaters, which serve patients in the area.
Stefanik, who backed Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, was previously nominated by the president to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. However, Trump withdrew the nomination, citing the GOP’s narrow majority in the House.
At 41 years old, Stefanik has hinted at a possible run for governor in 2026 against Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul. She recently announced that she will make a final decision on her candidacy later this year.
The Daily Beast contacted Stefanik’s office for further comment.
