This app, named Edefy, operates on a model similar to Uber, connecting families with specialized educational resources. It was launched in 2021 by a family with experience in investing in private schools overseas. According to the app’s website, its development was inspired by the rapid growth and success of pod and micro-schooling models.

The creators of Edefy revealed that the app was finalized this month after a period of piloting. They shared with a news outlet that they had been funding the development of the Edefy app for over two and a half years. A spokesperson explained that while a basic version of the app was used last year for some pilot pods, the first fully functional version for public use was just released. The team described this as version 1, with plans to continuously update the platform with new features each week.

The founder of the app, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed frustration with the current public education system. He emphasized the desire to break the infrastructure and logistics monopoly of traditional schooling. From his experience, he saw that the pod school model offered a more effective system for both children and teachers.

Edefy aims to create an in-person education environment that functions as a three-sided marketplace. This concept resembles an Airbnb for educational spaces and an Uber for connecting families directly with teachers. The founder acknowledged that developing such a platform was technically challenging, which contributed to the lengthy development process. However, he believes the implications of the app are exciting and could significantly impact the education sector.

Understanding Pod Schools and Microschooling

Pod schools operate similarly to microschooling, which combines elements of homeschooling with traditional public school settings. These models can be privately run or hosted at public institutions. The Indiana Microschool Collaborative defines microschools as small learning spaces within local communities where each student has a personalized learning plan tailored to their needs, interests, and goals.

While microschools are not a new concept, they have gained traction as more parents seek alternative education options. The trend of homeschooling has increased since the coronavirus pandemic, indicating a growing preference for alternatives to public schools. Although microschools are not a new idea, they offer a hybrid approach that allows for more personalized education.

School Choice and Financial Implications

School choice advocates argue that platforms like Edefy could revolutionize education by connecting teachers with students while giving parents more control over their child's education. Corey DeAngelis, a school choice advocate, compared the concept to Uber's impact on transportation. He noted that Uber lowered costs, increased quality, and improved the taxi business through competition. Similarly, he believes that Edefy could transform the education sector.

DeAngelis highlighted the financial aspect of the traditional public school system, where approximately $20,000 is spent per student annually. He proposed a scenario where this money could follow the child through school choice, allowing a teacher to establish a microschool with 12 students. In this case, the teacher could generate $240,000 in revenue each year, earning more than in the public school system while enjoying greater freedom from bureaucratic constraints.

He concluded that the concept of Edefy challenges the traditional factory model of schooling. Parents are increasingly seeking alternatives to the one-size-fits-all government school system, and the best teachers are ready to transition to more flexible and personalized environments. As more states pass universal school choice legislation, the demand for innovative solutions like Edefy is likely to grow.
