Dressed for Power: Zelensky in a Suit at the White House

A New Approach to the War in Ukraine
This time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky chose a different look. Instead of his usual military-style attire, he wore a jacket without a tie when he arrived at the White House. His previous visit had caused some tension with former President Donald Trump, who was reportedly upset by Zelensky's casual outfit and strong stance on the war.
On Monday, the atmosphere was noticeably different. As soon as Zelensky stepped out of his motorcade, Trump greeted him warmly, placing his arm around the Ukrainian leader. This gesture signaled a shift in their relationship, with both leaders showing more openness to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Trump has consistently advocated for an end to the war, even if his methods have been unpredictable. He recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska but later dropped the idea of an immediate ceasefire as a condition for further talks. Despite his earlier reluctance to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, Trump’s administration has shown a willingness to consider such measures.
While specific details of the ongoing negotiations remain unclear, Trump announced that Zelensky and Putin would arrange a meeting, followed by a trilateral summit involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine. Although the Russians had not publicly confirmed their participation, NATO leaders suggested they had accepted privately.
Zelensky expressed gratitude to the United States multiple times during his meetings with Trump, acknowledging the changes in his appearance. “As you see,” he told a reporter, “I changed.” He also thanked First Lady Melania Trump for her efforts in helping bring kidnapped Ukrainian children home from Russia.
The softer moment highlighted a strategic effort by Zelensky to build better relations with the U.S. and its allies. He was accompanied by seven European leaders, all focused on securing stronger security guarantees for Ukraine. When asked about his expectations, Zelensky simply replied, “Everything.”
Trump, while resistant to sending troops abroad, seemed open to a new arrangement where European countries take on more responsibility, with coordination from the U.S. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed dissatisfaction, reiterating Russia’s opposition to NATO troops in Ukraine.
Despite these challenges, the European leaders were largely supportive of Trump’s approach. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised Trump for opening the path to negotiations, while Finnish President Alexander Stubb noted significant progress in ending the war. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also commended Trump’s efforts.
However, underlying tensions remained. The European Union imported more than €21.9 billion in Russian fossil fuels last year, surpassing the €18.7 billion in financial aid provided to Ukraine. These imports continue to support the Russian war economy despite EU commitments to phase them out by 2027.
In the U.S., Democrats criticized Trump’s outreach to Russia, with Senator Chris Van Hollen accusing him of being “played by Vladimir Putin.” Meanwhile, some on the right expressed frustration with Zelensky, questioning his appearance and the amount of U.S. aid he has received.
Roger Stone, a longtime Trump confidant, mocked Zelensky’s choice of clothing, calling it a “costume” and questioning his leadership. However, Zelensky has managed to adapt to the changing political landscape, showing a willingness to engage with different leaders.
Zelensky’s ability to navigate this complex environment has led to improved relations with Trump, marking a significant shift from his earlier interactions with the Biden administration. As he prepares for future discussions, including a potential trilateral summit, Zelensky continues to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Trump, visibly pleased with Zelensky’s appearance, remarked, “I love it.” This moment symbolized a new chapter in the evolving relationship between the two leaders and their nations.
