A Unique Rescue on the Roof of a Mall

A remarkable event unfolded in Colorado Springs when a dog found herself stuck on the roof of the Citadel Mall. The incident, which captured the attention of both locals and animal lovers, ended with the pet safely returning to her owner.

The story began when security staff at the mall noticed a dog perched on the rooftop. Their initial reaction was confusion, as they couldn’t immediately figure out how the animal had gotten there. Animal Law Enforcement (ALE) was called in for assistance, and the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) became involved in the rescue effort.

According to HSPPR, the team had to come up with theories about why the dog, named Lila, was on the roof. One theory involved the possibility that she believed she was one of Santa’s reindeer, but it turned out to be an off-season scenario. “Our officers are used to seeing dogs in some interesting situations, but normally, those situations involve gravity,” HSPPR joked in a Facebook post. “Yet there she was, Lila the Summer Reindeer, looking around for a chimney and sweating in the Colorado sun.”

The humor in the situation didn’t detract from the urgency of the rescue. Lila needed help, and a plan was quickly put into action. An ALE officer was sent to the roof with a leash and water to calm the confused dog. At first, Lila was hesitant, but the officer’s gentle approach and the offer of water helped ease her anxiety.

Once Lila was comfortable, she was carefully lifted onto a stretcher. Two other officers and mall security worked together to ensure the process was safe and smooth. As the dog was brought down to the ground, something unexpected was discovered — Lila’s collar. This detail played a crucial role in reuniting her with her owner.

“Upon checking, we found that Lila’s owner had been searching for her for six long days,” HSPPR shared. “She had posted on lost pet sites and even filed a lost pet report with us.” Thanks to this information, the owner was quickly contacted, and a joyful reunion took place.

The emotional moment included hugs, happy tears, and the faint sound of imaginary sleigh bells. It was a heartwarming end to what could have been a stressful situation for both the dog and her human.

HSPPR also used the opportunity to remind pet owners of important safety measures. They emphasized the importance of keeping a collar on pets, ensuring ID tags are up-to-date, and considering microchipping. Additionally, they advised that filing a missing pet report can significantly increase the chances of a successful reunion.

As for Lila, the experience served as a reminder that even the most curious of pets can find themselves in unexpected places. “No more reindeer games, Lila. At least until December,” HSPPR teased in a lighthearted manner.

This incident highlights the importance of community involvement and the dedication of local organizations like HSPPR. Their quick response and compassionate care ensured that Lila was safely returned home, proving that even the most unusual situations can have a positive outcome.
