Did Scott Riccardi Crack 'Jeopardy!''s Top 10 All-Time Winners?

Scott Riccardi Secures 14th Win on Jeopardy! with a Record-Breaking Performance
Scott Riccardi, an engineer from Somerville, New Jersey, made history during his final appearance on Jeopardy! by securing his 14th win. With a total of $390,902, he climbed to 12th place in the all-time winners' list, surpassing Ray Lalonde. While he didn’t crack the top 10 in this particular game, his performance was nothing short of impressive.
Riccardi faced off against Gerri Budd, an adjunct professor and small business owner from Nutley, New Jersey, and Andrew Crowley, a freelance writer from Henderson, Nevada, on Wednesday, July 23. Host Ken Jennings highlighted the significance of Riccardi’s potential 15th win, noting that only 10 other champions in the show's history have reached that milestone. “Big stakes for Scott today,” Jennings remarked, emphasizing the high expectations surrounding the game.
The game began with Riccardi taking an early lead. He answered most clues correctly, showcasing his knowledge and strategic thinking. However, the competition remained tight as Budd found the first Daily Double. Despite being in the red with -$1,400, she wagered $1,000 and correctly answered the clue about the "Riot Act," bringing her up to -$400.
Budd shared a unique story during the interview: when she received the call that she would be on Jeopardy!, she was in her car and got pulled over by a police officer. After explaining her situation, the officer let her go with a warning. This anecdote added a personal touch to her otherwise intense competition.
By the end of the first round, Riccardi had a strong lead of $7,600, while Crowley trailed closely behind with $5,800. Budd, still in the negative with -$800, remained in the game but faced significant challenges.
In the Double Jeopardy round, Riccardi found the first Daily Double. With $12,000 in his bank, he wagered $5,000 on the category “Great Literature Before 2000.” The clue referenced Franz Kafka’s novel, and Riccardi quickly answered, “What is The Castle?” His correct response increased his total to $17,000.
Later, Riccardi found the last Daily Double of the game. Wagering $4,000 on “All About Animals,” he correctly identified the nine-spotted beetle as a ladybug, moving his total to $22,600. By the end of the round, Riccardi had a commanding lead of $32,200, with Crowley in second place at $9,400 and Budd finally breaking even at $3,200.
The Final Jeopardy category was “Famous Buildings.” The clue described a structure that opened in 1902, measuring 87 feet wide on the 22nd Street side and less than 7 feet at its narrowest point on 23rd Street. Only two contestants correctly identified the answer: the Flatiron Building in New York.
Budd wagered $3,100 and ended with $6,300, while Crowley incorrectly guessed the Tribeca Building and dropped to $9,000. Riccardi, who also correctly identified the Flatiron Building, wagered $7,808, bringing his total to $40,008. This secured his 14th win and placed him eighth in all-time winnings, surpassing several notable contestants.
With a 15-day total of $430,910, Riccardi now sits just $510 ahead of David Madden, who holds the seventh position. To reach the top seven, Riccardi would need to win an additional $101,587.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Riccardi’s next game, where he will aim for his 15th win on the penultimate episode of the season. Whether he can achieve this milestone remains to be seen, but his performance so far has already solidified his place in Jeopardy! history.
