A Man Accused of a Destructive DUI Crash Claims He Didn’t Realize He Hit Someone

In a shocking incident that left one man critically injured and caused widespread disruption, a 27-year-old man has been charged with multiple offenses after allegedly driving under the influence and causing a chain of destruction in Las Vegas. The incident, which occurred on July 31, involved a high-speed collision that resulted in serious injuries to a pedestrian and damage to several public infrastructure elements.

Roberto Olivas is facing two felony charges: driving under the influence resulting in substantial bodily harm and reckless driving resulting in substantial bodily harm. Additionally, he is charged with three misdemeanor counts, including operating a motor vehicle without proof of insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle, and failing to provide information after a minor collision. These charges were filed by the Clark County District Attorney’s office on August 5.

According to a video obtained by 8 News Now Investigators, Olivas was seen speaking on his phone shortly after the crash. In the video, he says, “I hit some [Expletive], bro,” and adds, “I don’t know what happened.” When a bystander told him he had hit a man, Olivas responded, “No, no, I didn’t hit nobody. Did I hit somebody? Shut up. No, I didn’t.” He then expressed disbelief that he survived the crash, saying, “Holy [Expletive], I’m still alive.”

The 61-year-old man who was struck suffered critical injuries, including a brain bleed, a fractured jaw, a torn lung, broken ribs, and a broken leg. He was rushed to University Medical Center for treatment. According to police reports, Olivas first had a minor collision with a Maserati at Rampart Boulevard and Vegas Drive before fleeing the scene. The Maserati driver followed him, leading to a high-speed chase.

At the time of the crash, Olivas was reportedly traveling at nearly 100 mph in a 35-mile-per-hour zone. His vehicle lost control and collided with a fire hydrant, an electrical box, a light pole, a water utility box, and a bus shelter before overturning. The crash caused a power outage affecting approximately 3,500 residents in the area, which was restored about three hours later.

Olivas sustained injuries, including a possible fractured neck. He told police he had been at the Suncoast Casino before the crash. While he admitted to consuming something, the details were redacted from the arrest report. Blood samples were collected as evidence, but results were not immediately available.

This is not the first time Olivas has faced legal consequences for traffic-related offenses. Records show he was arrested in 2017 for DUI, speeding, and possessing an open container of alcohol. During that incident, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper observed Olivas speeding at 94 mph in a 65 mph zone. The trooper noticed a strong smell of alcohol and found three open containers of alcohol in his vehicle. Olivas admitted to smoking marijuana a few days prior and using hallucinogens. He was taken into custody and eventually pleaded guilty to DUI.

He served a total of two days in jail and received a suspended sentence that included conditions such as completing DUI school, community service, and a coroner program. However, due to the impact of the pandemic, the coroner program requirement was waived. His case was closed in August 2020.

As of Wednesday evening, Olivas remained in custody, according to jail records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 19. The case continues to unfold, raising questions about repeat offenses and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
