"Destination X" Boss Reveals the Challenge of Keeping Contestants in the Dark

As the Season 1 finale approaches, showrunner Andy Cadman shared insights into the challenges of keeping the contestants in the dark while navigating Europe.

The Challenge of Keeping Contestants in the Dark

Cadman described the difficulty of maintaining the mystery around the bus’s whereabouts. “It was really hard,” he admitted. “They knew where the sun was rising and setting, and knowing which direction they were going in made it challenging.” To keep the contestants unaware, the production team drove in circles, turned the bus around, and created safe zones where contestants could get off the bus without seeing their surroundings.

“The logistical issues were massive,” Cadman said. “We had to use blindfolds and goggles to keep them from seeing anything. It’s tough these days to launch a linear show, but we’re relieved that everything worked out.”

Ratings Success and Final Race

Upon its May premiere, "Destination X" achieved impressive ratings, drawing attention from viewers across the country. Now, the final three contestants—Biggy Bailey, Rick Szabo, and Peter Weber—are racing through London to win the grand prize of $250,000.

“We found something special with the cast,” Cadman said. “The excitement was there from the start, and despite the challenges, it all came together in the end.”

Weber entered the game as a midseason twist, bringing in "Love Island USA" star JaNa Craig. Meanwhile, Bailey and Szabo have been strong contenders throughout the season. One standout moment was an episode where Bailey tricked a fellow contestant into guessing the wrong country, which Cadman called his favorite of the season.

Potential for Season 2 and More Twists

Cadman hinted at potential changes for a second season, suggesting more twists and challenges. “I think we’d want to make it harder because the contestants come in ready to play,” he explained. “More twists and turns would be great.”

He also praised Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the games master, for his role in shaping the show’s unpredictable nature. “Flipping the script on the contestants is one of my favorite things,” Cadman said. “Putting people in situations where they’re damned if they do or don’t is what I enjoy most.”

Where Could Season 2 Go?

While no official plans have been announced, Cadman teased potential locations for a second season. “I love creepy places like Venice,” he said. “Haunted castles and dark, moody settings could be a fun direction.”

Other Projects in the Works

In addition to "Destination X," another of Cadman’s shows, "Love Island Games," has already been greenlit for a second season on Peacock. “Season 1 was wild, and Season 2 will be even more so,” he said. “Ben [Thursby] and I have some exciting ideas coming up.”
