Desperate Housewives Star Unaware of On-Screen Rivalry

A Cast Member’s Perspective on the Drama of Desperate Housewives
Jesse Metcalfe, known for his role as John Rowland on Desperate Housewives, has shared insights into his time on the show and the behind-the-scenes dynamics that were often whispered about. During a recent panel at the Southfork Experience, he reflected on his experience and admitted to being “oblivious” to the tensions that reportedly existed among some of the leading female cast members.
Metcalfe played a teenage gardener whose character had an affair with Gabrielle Solis, portrayed by Eva Longoria. Despite the rumors of conflicts between Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Nicolette Sheridan, he didn’t pick up on any signs of discord during his time on the show.
“I was just happy to have a job,” he said. “I went through an entire pilot season without booking anything, and I tested for Desperate Housewives right at the end of that pilot season. I ended up booking it.”
He expressed gratitude for being a series regular in the show’s first season and continuing in later seasons. “I was just kind of riding the wave because that show really broke me and I had everything coming at me. I was just enjoying it,” he added.
Metcalfe acknowledged that there were many stories circulating about the drama among the lead actresses. However, he felt he was too focused on his own experience to notice the tension. “I was oblivious to it, basically, because I was so thrilled to be on a show and just so in the moment.”
The Tensions Among the Female Cast
Teri Hatcher, who played Susan Mayer, was one of the show’s most prominent stars. She addressed claims of difficult behavior on set in a 2013 interview with The Daily Mail. Hatcher denied allegations that she had a difficult relationship with the crew, especially after her co-stars—Marcia Cross, Eva Longoria, and Felicity Huffman—sent them a farewell gift of luggage without involving her. “That crew knows I’d have jumped in front of a bus for them at any moment,” she said.
Another notable incident involved Nicolette Sheridan, who filed a lawsuit against Disney, ABC, production studio Touchstone, and show creator Marc Cherry. She claimed that her character, Edie Britt, was killed off the show in 2009 due to a conflict with Cherry. She alleged that he struck her on the head during a disagreement and then fired her after she complained. “I was the victim of assault and battery on the set of Desperate Housewives by the creator of the show, my boss,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2018.
Her case was initially dismissed by a judge in 2017, but she appealed. The court ruled that while she was not “wrongfully terminated,” the production company simply chose not to renew her contract, which did not constitute discrimination.
A New Spin on the Iconic Series
Kerry Washington’s production company is currently working on a reboot of Desperate Housewives titled Wisteria Lane, a nod to the fictional street where the original cast lived. The new series is described as a “fun, sexy, darkly comedic soap/mystery, in the vein of Desperate Housewives.” It will follow five very different friends and sometimes frenemies living on a picture-perfect cul-de-sac called “Wisteria Lane.”
The official synopsis states, “On the surface, all the Wisteria neighbors are living the dream. Beautiful homes, gorgeous families, shiny SUVs in the driveway — but behind those white picket fences and smiling Insta posts, are SECRETS.”
As the project is still in development, Metcalfe said he wasn’t sure if he would appear in Wisteria Lane. “I don’t know if they're going to use any of the original cast,” he told the panel.
The Legacy of Desperate Housewives
The original series, which ran for eight seasons, remains a cultural phenomenon. Its mix of mystery, humor, and drama captivated audiences and left a lasting impact on television. While the behind-the-scenes tensions may have been more complex than what was shown on screen, the show’s success continues to inspire new projects and reimaginings.
As Wisteria Lane moves forward, fans are eager to see how the story will evolve and whether it can capture the same magic that made Desperate Housewives a beloved classic.
