A Veteran Leader in Florida Politics

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made a significant move in his administration by appointing state Senator Jay Collins as his second-in-command. This decision marks a unique moment in U.S. politics, as the DeSantis-Collins leadership team is the only all-veteran executive pair in the country. Collins, a Republican from Tampa, brings a wealth of experience and a strong background in both military service and public policy.

Collins has been recognized for his bravery during his time in the military. As a Green Beret, he earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart while serving in the War on Terror. His service extended beyond the battlefield, as he was also deployed to South America. Despite his accomplishments, Collins pointed out that DeSantis does not often speak about his own Navy service. During his time in the military, DeSantis served as a JAG officer for the U.S. Navy and acted as a rules-of-engagement legal adviser to Seal Team One during President George W. Bush’s Iraqi "surge."

A Hero with a Unique Perspective

Collins' journey has not been without challenges. He lost a leg in Afghanistan, but he humorously noted, "I didn’t lose a leg; I know where it is." His resilience and determination have made him a respected figure in Florida politics. In addition to his military service, Collins played a key role in organizing the evacuation of Jewish Americans from Israel after the October 7, 2023, terror attack. While DeSantis coordinated the operation from Tallahassee, Collins personally traveled to Israel and Jordan to ensure the safety of U.S. citizens.

"Senator Jay Collins is the Chuck Norris of Florida politics," DeSantis said. "I am proud to announce today that I am appointing him to be the next lieutenant governor of the ‘Free State of Florida.’"

A Background Rooted in Hardship and Service

Collins’ story is one of perseverance and dedication. He grew up in a small Montana community near the Saskatchewan border and was adopted. Raised by his grandparents, he witnessed the loss of his father before he could fully understand the world around him. However, he chose to serve his nation, believing that it provided him with the opportunities to rise above his circumstances.

"I didn’t grow up with privilege or wealth," Collins reflected. "I was adopted. Raised on my grandparents. I watched my father pass away before I was really a man. And later chose to serve our nation to fight for a nation that afforded me every opportunity to climb out of those circumstances and rose up to be something new, something dynamic, something unique to my family."

He emphasized that despite his humble beginnings, he believes that everyone has the potential to achieve great things. "You see, I grew up in a trailer, but in our nation, you're not defined by that. There are opportunities ahead of everybody."

A New Chapter in Leadership

With the departure of former Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, who took a position at Florida International University, Collins is stepping into a pivotal role. His appointment signals a commitment to strong, veteran-led leadership in Florida. DeSantis praised Collins for his contributions as a senator, noting that he has been one of the most productive lawmakers in recent history.

Collins expressed his gratitude for the governor's trust and support. "I really want to thank the governor and the first lady for their trust and their faith in myself and our family."

In addition to his political work, Collins has shown a deep commitment to community service. During hurricanes that hit the lower Gulf Coast, he was on the ground feeding people and helping displaced residents through his charity efforts. His hands-on approach and dedication to public service have solidified his reputation as a leader who truly cares about the people of Florida.

As Collins takes on his new role, he continues to embody the values of service, resilience, and leadership that have defined his career. His story serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with determination and a strong sense of purpose, anyone can make a difference.
