This plea comes as Senate Democrats, who are currently out of power in Washington, seek to influence the administration's approach after the recent collapse of ceasefire negotiations. President Trump recently expressed concerns about the situation in Gaza, stating that he wants Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ensure that food reaches the people there. He referenced images of hungry children and announced plans to set up food centers to tackle the humanitarian crisis, though no details were provided.

Despite the president’s statements, the White House and the State Department have yet to release specifics on the food center initiative. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of Trump’s plans, questioning why the U.S. does not allow established groups like the World Food Program and Mercy Corps to continue their long-standing efforts. He emphasized the importance of allowing these organizations to operate without interference.

Democratic Unity on Foreign Policy

The letter, signed by 44 senators, highlights a rare moment of unity among Democrats on a foreign policy issue that previously divided them while they held the White House. The senators called for an end to the conflict, opposed any permanent displacement of Palestinians, and advocated for a two-state solution. Senator Adam Schiff noted that the current situation is unsustainable due to the high levels of suffering and loss of life.

However, this unity may face challenges from Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats. Sanders introduced a resolution to block the sale of offensive U.S. arms to Israel, a move that has previously split the party. Senator Peter Welch of Vermont delivered a passionate speech on the floor, accusing Israel of committing a war crime by using starvation as a tactic and urging the U.S. to cancel bomb shipments.

While many Democrats are focused on humanitarian aid and ceasefire efforts, others are pushing for more radical changes, such as cutting off military support to Israel.
