Democrat J.D. Scholten Withdraws from Iowa Senate Race, Backs Josh Turek

Democratic Candidate J.D. Scholten Ends Campaign, Supports Josh Turek in Iowa Senate Race
J.D. Scholten, a state representative from Sioux City and former Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, has decided to withdraw from the 2026 Iowa Senate race and endorse fellow state legislator Josh Turek. Scholten was one of the first Democrats to enter the race in early June against Republican incumbent Senator Joni Ernst. His exit marks the first sign of consolidation among the growing list of Democratic contenders.
In a statement, Scholten emphasized his belief that Turek is the best candidate to address key issues like healthcare, which he described as being "ripped from millions of Americans." He added that Turek is "the best Democrat in Iowa" to champion these causes. Scholten also highlighted that Turek, a former Paralympian and wheelchair basketball gold medalist, represents the kind of "prairie populist athlete" who could win in the general election.
A Shared Vision for Iowa
Scholten and Turek have developed a strong friendship since both were elected to the Iowa House in 2022. They have worked together on several legislative initiatives, including lowering costs for families, improving healthcare access, and making housing more affordable. Their shared values and experiences have made them natural allies in the upcoming campaign.
Turek expressed his gratitude for Scholten’s endorsement, noting that their collaboration has already created momentum for his campaign. "We’ve got a lot of energy and excitement," Turek said. "And this is what we need to do as Democrats—we need to come together and beat Joni Ernst because Iowans deserve a senator who works for them."
Turek plans to focus his campaign on "kitchen table issues," such as healthcare, while also emphasizing his commitment to breaking up monopolies and reforming campaign finance. His campaign launched with a powerful video showing him navigating stairs and dragging his wheelchair to speak with voters, highlighting his determination and connection to everyday Iowans.
The Growing Democratic Field
The Democratic primary for the 2026 Senate race has become increasingly competitive. In addition to Scholten and Turek, other candidates include State Senator Zach Wahls, former Knoxville Chamber of Commerce Director Nathan Sage, and Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris. Each of these candidates brings unique strengths and perspectives to the race.
Wahls, for example, recently secured the endorsement of Ironworkers Local 89, marking the first local labor union in Iowa to back a Senate candidate. This support underscores the importance of organized labor in shaping the political landscape. Wahls has been vocal about his commitment to working families, advocating for better wages, safer workplaces, and stronger collective bargaining rights.
Sage and Norris have also been active in the race, though their fundraising efforts have varied. Sage raised over $700,000 in the second quarter, while Wahls raised $656,000 despite launching his campaign just weeks before the fundraising deadline. Norris, who announced her campaign in August, has not yet reported any fundraising details.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the growing number of candidates, Scholten remains confident that the Democratic race is winnable. He believes that having the right candidate and a strong campaign are essential to defeating Ernst. Scholten also plans to support Turek by introducing him to key contacts and helping to campaign across the state.
Turek acknowledged the importance of winning in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, where Scholten previously ran for Congress. "We need to do very well out here to be able to win statewide," Turek said. "Having J.D.’s endorsement is certainly going to help us in that area."
As the race continues to evolve, the Democratic Party will need to unify its efforts and build on the momentum generated by endorsements and grassroots support. With multiple candidates vying for the nomination, the path to victory in 2026 will require strategic planning, strong leadership, and a clear vision for Iowa’s future.
