Gregg Pemberton, chairman of the DC Police Union, highlighted the issue during an interview with NBC Washington last month. For instance, instead of reporting a shooting or stabbing, officers might be directed to record a theft or a lesser assault. Jeffries stated that violent crime in DC is at a 35-year low, while Clinton echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that crime rates remain historically low despite Trump’s claims. However, recent data paints a different picture. According to a February report by the Rochester Institute of Technology, DC has the fourth-highest murder rate per capita in the US. In 2023, there were 265 murders, marking a 20-year high, followed by 186 in 2024. Despite a 30.7% drop in homicides between those years, DC still ranks among the worst cities for murder rates.

The MPD’s data claims a 35% overall drop in violent crime between 2023 and 2024, with 5,345 incidents reported in 2023 and 3,469 in 2024. However, critics argue that these numbers do not reflect the reality on the ground. Pemberton, speaking on Fox Business, expressed concerns that the department is using manipulated statistics to downplay the severity of the situation.

He argued that crime in DC is out of control and that the public perception of declining crime is misleading. According to him, officers continue to encounter armed carjackings, stabbings, robberies, and shootings, indicating that the problem remains significant.
