A Life Sentence for a Calculated Crime

James Craig, a former Colorado dentist, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of murdering his wife. The case, which has shocked many, involved a methodical and calculated approach to poisoning his wife with arsenic and other harmful substances over an extended period.

During the sentencing hearing at Arapahoe County Court, Judge Shay Whitaker compared Craig to a natural disaster, stating, "Dr. Craig unleashed a path of destruction as wide as a tornado, and just as devastating." This powerful metaphor captured the profound impact of Craig's actions on his family and community.

Miriam Meservy, one of the daughters of Craig and his victim Angela Craig, shared her emotional experience during the proceedings. She described how life will no longer be as bright without her mother. Meservy was among several family members who spoke before the judge delivered the sentence.

The jury found Craig guilty of first-degree murder in the early afternoon. Authorities revealed that before her death, Craig had searched the internet for information on how to make a murder look like a heart attack, the time it takes to die from arsenic poisoning, and whether an undetectable poison exists. Over time, he poisoned Angela’s protein shakes with arsenic, cyanide, and tetrahydrozoline. His final act of poisoning occurred while she was hospitalized, leading to her death.

Craig’s defense claimed that Angela had planned to commit suicide, but friends and family insisted she was not depressed and would not have taken such a step. In addition to the murder charge, Craig was also convicted of solicitation to commit first-degree murder for asking another inmate to kill the lead investigator in the case. He faced additional charges, including two counts of solicitation of tampering with physical evidence and two counts of solicitation of first-degree perjury. The judge imposed the maximum sentence for each charge, adding another 37 years to his prison term.

Angela’s family and friends had the opportunity to speak before the sentencing. Two of her six children gave impact statements, along with several of her siblings. Many described Angela as a light in the family, emphasizing her role as a loving mother to her children.

Meservy delivered an emotional statement, highlighting how her father destroyed the lives of his family members. “I'm supposed to be able to trust my dad. He was supposed to be my hero and instead he will forever be the villain in my life,” she said.

Craig showed emotion during the hearing, weeping and reacting strongly when his son spoke. Toliver Craig, the oldest child and son of the couple, shared his feelings about losing both his mother and father in a short period. “It's hard to lose your mom, and then a few days after that, lose your dad. And then after that, you know, having to spend the next two and a half years having to untangle whatever he tells you. It's just been really hard not being able to mourn my mom.”

District Attorney Amy Padden of the 18th Judicial District expressed her sentiments about Craig’s actions. “Craig's selfish and deceitful actions shattered a family, stole a mother from six children and attempted to manipulate those closest to him with chilling calculation.” She added, “I hope this conviction and life sentence in prison brings a measure of justice to Angela, to her children, to her family and everyone who loved her.”

This tragic case serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of betrayal and the importance of justice for victims and their families.
