A Tragic Love Story Turned Deadly

Pediatric dentist Kendra Hatcher believed she had found true love, but her life was tragically cut short when someone else refused to let go. On September 2, 2015, Hatcher was shot in the head while returning home from work at the parking garage of her Dallas apartment complex. Her murder remains one of the most shocking cases investigated by law enforcement.

Hatcher, who dedicated her life to helping others, especially through dental care for the underprivileged in Ecuador during her studies, was known for her kindness and compassion. She had recently become engaged to Dr. Ricardo “Ricky” Paniagua, a dermatologist whose warm personality quickly captured her heart. The couple had been together for just a few months but were already planning their future, including a romantic trip to Mexico.

The night of the murder, Hatcher was returning home when she was shot in the parking garage. An eyewitness described hearing screams and gunshots before seeing a black Jeep Cherokee speeding away with two masked individuals inside. Police initially suspected a robbery gone wrong, but the crime scene raised many questions.

Clues and Surveillance Footage

Surveillance footage revealed that the driver of the Jeep was a woman. The car entered the garage behind a resident and followed them in. Another camera captured an unknown individual getting out of the Jeep and walking toward where Hatcher's vehicle was parked. After firing the fatal shot, the figure returned to the passenger seat as the Jeep sped away.

Dallas police released images of the vehicle and its driver, which led to the identification of the Jeep’s owner, Jose Luis-Ortiz. He claimed he had loaned the car to his friend Brenda Delgado, who later said it was borrowed by Crystal Cortes, a single mother. Cortes initially denied involvement but eventually confessed after being confronted with the evidence.

Cortes admitted to being in the garage and stated that she had gone there with a man named “Lamar,” who allegedly planned to rob Hatcher. However, she claimed that he shot her after she resisted. Through cell phone data, police identified “Lamar” as Kristopher Love. A drug-sniffing dog named Titan helped recover the weapon used in the shooting from Love’s car.

The Motive Behind the Murder

As investigators delved deeper, they discovered that Delgado was Paniagua’s ex-girlfriend. Their relationship had ended several years prior, but she continued to stalk him, tracking his location and even entering his apartment without permission. Shortly before Hatcher’s murder, Paniagua had asked Delgado to remove her belongings and expressed how serious his relationship with Hatcher had become.

Delgado, who had been planning revenge, recruited Cortes and Love to carry out the crime. Cortes later testified that Delgado had orchestrated the entire plan, while Love claimed he was only hired to steal Hatcher’s purse. Despite his denials, Love was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death.

The Aftermath and Convictions

Cortes pleaded guilty to murder and agreed to testify against Love and Delgado. Love was executed in 2018, while Delgado went on trial in 2019. Prosecutors presented evidence showing that Delgado had also approached others to help with the murder. Cortes’ testimony and other witnesses confirmed her role in the plot.

After just 18 minutes of deliberation, the jury convicted Delgado. She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Despite fleeing to Mexico, she was eventually captured and extradited to the United States.
