"Confident in His Leadership": DEA Chief to Oversee DC Police Efforts

Federal Oversight of Washington D.C. Police Department Under New Leadership
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrator Terry Cole has been appointed as the federal designee to assist in managing the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). His role is part of a broader effort by the federal government to address rising crime rates and enhance public safety in the nation’s capital. Cole, who has extensive experience in law enforcement, is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring that local police departments comply with federal directives, particularly regarding immigration enforcement.
Cole’s appointment follows a significant intervention by the Trump administration, which announced measures to combat violent crime in Washington D.C. This decision came in response to several high-profile incidents, including the murder of a Congressional intern. The move has sparked discussions about the balance between local autonomy and federal oversight in law enforcement.
“We cannot afford to turn a blind eye,” Cole stated during an interview with Fox News Channel’s “The Story.” He emphasized the importance of cooperation between federal and local authorities, highlighting that police officers are eager to return to their core responsibilities.
The Attorney General Pam Bondi issued an order on Friday that outlines Cole’s specific duties. According to the directive, he will serve as the “designee for the duration of the emergency declared by the President” and will be responsible for directing the Mayor of the District of Columbia to provide necessary services from the MPD. This includes facilitating full cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
A spokesperson for the Department of Justice (DOJ) noted that this new order is stronger than previous ones, as it mandates complete compliance with federal immigration laws. This marks a shift from earlier policies that had been criticized for limiting federal access to local law enforcement resources.
Despite these changes, Washington D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith will retain her position. However, Cole will have a significant influence over city leaders, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, to ensure that MPD aligns with federal priorities. Since the takeover, dozens of arrests have been made, many involving illegal immigrants. Federal agencies such as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have increased their presence in the capital, patrolling streets and working closely with local police.
The White House has expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing that President Trump remains committed to making Washington D.C. safer. A statement from White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said, “President Trump will continue pursuing all efforts to Make DC Safe Again and end violent crime despite liberal opposition.”
Cole’s background in law enforcement includes over 20 years of service at the DEA before retiring in 2020. He later served as Virginia’s Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security from 2023 to 2025. His leadership in Virginia has been widely praised, particularly for his role in combating drug trafficking.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin highlighted Cole’s contributions during an appearance on Fox Business Network. He praised the DEA administrator for his work in tackling illegal drugs and emphasized that his leadership will prioritize the safety of Americans. Youngkin also noted that Cole’s efforts in Virginia, such as Operation FREE, have led to the seizure of large quantities of illicit drugs, including fentanyl.
“Their leadership has become a standard for collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement,” Youngkin said. “He will put the safety and security of Americans first as head of the DEA.”
As the federal government continues its involvement in Washington D.C., the focus remains on reducing crime, improving cooperation between agencies, and ensuring that law enforcement practices align with national priorities. With Cole at the helm, the emphasis is on restoring public trust and enhancing the effectiveness of local police departments.
