Community Comes Together to Support Niagara Falls Hospital During AC Outage
When the air conditioning system at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center failed during a recent heat wave, it created an uncomfortable situation for both patients and staff. The hospital, located in Niagara Falls, New York, faced sweltering temperatures as the unit broke down on Friday. Despite the challenging conditions, the community quickly rallied together to provide support, showcasing the power of collective action.
The problem began when the hospital’s air conditioning unit stopped working. With temperatures soaring and humidity levels high, some patient rooms became unbearably hot, reaching well above 80 degrees. Sara Capen, director of the medical center, explained that the motor was only six months old and under warranty. However, there were limited options for repairs, with only two places available to fix it — one in Syracuse and the other in Boston.
Despite the discomfort, the hospital reported no injuries during the roughly 36-hour outage. Nurses and doctors worked tirelessly to ensure patients remained as comfortable as possible. “Our team at the Memorial Medical Center was amazing,” said Capen. “They went out and purchased fans. Our human resources department distributed popsicles as well to everyone.”
One local resident, Jill Shaw, whose mother is receiving care at the hospital, felt the heat firsthand during a visit. Inspired to help, she posted on social media asking neighbors to drop off fans. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Shaw also reached out to the Home Depot on Builders Way, where she spoke with Mark Mungovan, a local store manager.
Mungovan, who was moved by the request, acted swiftly. “I just didn’t even hesitate. I just figured, let’s do it,” he said. Within a few hours, he and his team delivered 80 fans — free of charge — to the hospital. “My staff just took action, got the fans down, got them ready,” Mungovan explained. “I went and got my personal truck and brought it up. By the time I cleaned out the bed of my truck, there were volunteers from the community pulling up to the store, ready to load fans. It was awesome. We just loaded up three vehicles and made our way to the hospital.”
Shaw expressed her gratitude for the community's support, saying, “The response was overwhelming — our community showed up with love and support, and Mark went above and beyond with his generous donation.” Mungovan credited Home Depot for giving him the autonomy to act. “Our values of giving back and taking care of people, they want us to do those things in the community. So it’s really up to me to just take action and go for it.”
Capen echoed the sentiment, highlighting the spirit of the people in Niagara Falls. “It really is a testament to the true spirit of the people of Niagara Falls — and why Memorial Medical Center is not only an asset, but more importantly, the people here are an asset and stand behind one another,” she said.
The hospital’s air conditioning was eventually repaired on Saturday. While the technical issue was resolved, those involved emphasized that it was the simple act of kindness from the community that made all the difference. The event served as a reminder of the strength found in unity and the impact of individual actions in times of need.
