Community Support and the Resiliency Fund

The San Diego community once again demonstrated its generosity by raising over $170,000 at the 34th Annual Mama’s Day culinary event. This year’s event also served as a platform to introduce the new Resiliency Fund, which aims to raise $1 million for Mama’s Kitchen amid significant federal funding cuts. These cuts are a direct result of changes in the recently passed federal budget bill, impacting programs like Medi-Cal.

Eva Matthews, CEO of Mama’s Kitchen, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. “Every year we are blown away by the outpouring of support we receive for Mama’s Day, but this year, as we face funding cuts that directly impact almost 40% of the people we serve, that support is more important than ever,” she said. The funds raised from Mama’s Day will be used to ensure that clients receive the necessary assistance during their most critical times. Additionally, the event highlighted the importance of the Resiliency Fund, which will help maintain access to services despite potential policy changes.

Culinary Event Highlights

The event featured a variety of culinary partners, including 6th & G Breakfast Co., Babe Kombucha, Carnitas’ Snack Shack, The Cottage, La Gran Terraza, Maya’s Cookies, Off The Plancha, Pali Wine Co., The Pastrami Stand, Piatti, R&B Tea, Sally’s Fish House, Snooze A.M. Eatery, and Sushi Assassin. Attendees enjoyed unlimited tastings and snacks throughout the evening at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. In addition to the food, guests were treated to live music, dazzling magic tricks, and an in-depth presentation on the Resiliency Fund by Matthews.

Understanding the Resiliency Fund

Mama’s Kitchen has already been notified that one of its largest federal funding sources will be canceled for the remaining contract years, resulting in a loss of over $200,000 annually. With the signing of the federal budget bill on July 4, the expected annual loss increased to $350,000. The Resiliency Fund is designed to recover these lost funds and create a safety net to prevent any interruptions in service for individuals who rely on Mama’s Kitchen through Medi-Cal.

Approximately 42% of Mama’s Kitchen’s funding comes from federal sources such as grants and Medi-Cal reimbursements. This means that up to 400,000 meals for 1,300 people each year could be at risk. For many of these individuals, medically tailored meals are not just part of their treatment plan but their only means of accessing consistent, nutritious food.

Importance of Medically Tailored Meals

Medically tailored meals are specialized, nutrient-dense meal plans that can enhance immune responses for specific illnesses. While they do not replace traditional treatment, they significantly improve the effectiveness of treatments for conditions like cancer, heart disease, and HIV.

Beyond individual benefits, the widespread use of medically tailored meals can reduce the burden on the healthcare system. A study by the Journal of the American Medical Association found that when individuals with complex health conditions receive these meals, there is a 50% decrease in hospitalization and a 70% drop in emergency room visits. This leads to a 16% reduction in net healthcare costs.

A similar study from the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy predicted that if all eligible patients received medically tailored meals, nearly 1.6 million hospitalizations could be avoided, saving $13.6 billion in the first year. Medically tailored meal providers play a crucial role in the care of the chronically ill, who account for 50% of national healthcare costs.

Ways to Support Mama’s Kitchen

Supporting Mama’s Kitchen’s meal delivery services can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. Donating directly to the Resiliency Fund is one of the most effective ways to help. However, there are other ways to contribute as well.

Mama’s Kitchen always needs volunteers in the kitchen preparing food, answering calls at the reception desk, or delivering meals across San Diego. Volunteering allows members of the community to have a hands-on impact on the organization’s daily operations and helps alleviate the financial strain caused by funding cuts.
