Remembering a Bright Future Cut Short

Family, friends, and classmates gathered to honor 16-year-old Davell Antoine Holden III, a South Holland honor student and basketball standout who was fatally shot on August 2. The community came together to remember a young man whose life was filled with promise and potential. Loved ones described Holden as a dedicated athlete and role model, while also mourning the future he will never get to experience, including the dream of playing college basketball.

No arrests have been made in the case, and the community continues to seek justice for Holden. A $10,000 reward is now being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the person or people responsible for his death. As the search for answers continues, the focus remains on finding closure for Holden’s family and ensuring that his legacy lives on.

A Celebration of Life and Legacy

Nearly 200 relatives and classmates attended a vigil and balloon release in Holden’s honor on Wednesday evening. The event was a heartfelt tribute to a young man who had touched so many lives. Holden, a rising junior at Thornwood High School, was known not only for his academic achievements but also for his talent on the basketball court. He was a standout player for the Thornwood Thunderbirds, wearing No. 21 on his jersey.

Holden's mother, Angela Birts, shared her grief and pride in her son. "My son was everything, an awesome young man," she said. "My baby was loved by so many people, and this is just a testament of it." She expressed how deeply her family has been affected by his loss, especially her youngest son, who looked up to Holden in every way.

A Passion for Basketball

Holden's passion for basketball was evident in everything he did. His coach and close friend, Kay'Shaun Thomas, spoke about how focused Holden was on improving his skills. "He had this deep passion for basketball, and it showed out there on the court," Thomas said. "He was really focused on progression, he wanted to get better, he wanted to see us as a program get better."

Thomas also highlighted the values Holden stood for—purity, effort, and honesty. "Now we gotta put in two times the work, because now we're fighting for a greater purpose," he added. The community is now united in its determination to honor Holden's memory by continuing to support the values he lived by.

A Heartfelt Sendoff

At the vigil, blue, white, and silver balloons filled the sky as those closest to Holden shared words of hope and strength. The event served as a powerful reminder of the impact one life can have on so many others. Thomas reflected on how many lives Holden had positively influenced. "I honestly feel great just seeing how many people whose lives were impacted positively by Davell," he said. "And it shows how many people he cared about."

Seeking Justice and Answers

As the investigation continues, the Village of South Holland and Father Michael Pfleger from Saint Sabina Church have joined forces to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the shooter. Those with information are encouraged to come forward, either anonymously through an online tip submission or by calling 833-805-0187.

The community remains hopeful that justice will be served and that the truth behind Holden's tragic death will be uncovered. In the meantime, his family, friends, and teammates continue to carry his memory with them, striving to live by the values he embodied every day.
