Coach discovers stolen truck carrying kids' soccer equipment

A Community Comes Together to Support a Dedicated Soccer Coach
When Kevin Morales, the founder of the Santa Clarita Youth Soccer League, woke up to find his truck stolen from his driveway, he wasn’t just losing a vehicle — he was losing years of hard work and dedication. The theft left him with a significant challenge: replacing thousands of dollars worth of equipment that is essential for the league’s upcoming season.
Morales, who has spent years building a program that now serves around 600 children between the ages of 3 and 14, described the loss as heartbreaking. His truck was packed with everything needed for the new season, including balls, jerseys, and even professional-grade goals that can cost hundreds of dollars each. “I don’t really care about the truck, it’s insured,” Morales said in a phone interview. “Like I said, it’s the equipment.”
The incident occurred early Sunday morning when Morales was woken up by a loud noise and the sound of breaking glass. He ran outside in his boxers and saw a teenager hunched over the steering wheel of his white Chevy Silverado. Without thinking, he pounded on the window, but the thief managed to start the truck and drive off, nearly hitting Morales as it reversed toward his wife’s car.
Despite the shock, Morales decided to chase the thief in his smaller Tacoma. He followed the truck down a side street, only to be met with another terrifying moment when the stolen Silverado came at him head-on in what Morales called a high-stakes game of “chicken.” The truck scraped the side of his Tacoma before speeding off into the night.
A Labor of Love
The Santa Clarita Youth Soccer League is more than just a sports program — it’s a labor of love for Morales. Over the years, he has worked tirelessly to build a professional environment that both kids and parents appreciate. The equipment he lost is not just functional; it represents the quality and commitment that have made the league successful.
While the truck itself is insured, the impact on the league is significant. Morales had planned to evaluate about 100 first-time players in the coming days to determine their placement in the program. However, the theft forced him to cancel those evaluations, which he did via text messages to the parents involved.
Despite the setback, Morales remains hopeful. He has been overwhelmed by the support from the community, especially from the parents who have helped fundraise through a GoFundMe campaign. In just one day, the campaign raised more than $3,200 out of its $4,500 goal, with many donations coming in $100 and $200 increments.

Moving Forward
Although the theft has created challenges, Morales remains focused on the future of the league. He expressed gratitude for the understanding from the parents and the community, and he is confident that the program will continue to thrive.
With the help of friends, supporters, and the local community, Morales is working to rebuild what was lost. His story is a testament to the power of compassion and the strength of a community united by a shared passion for youth sports.
