Local Pet Resource Center Seeks Immediate Help to Protect Dogs During Record Heat

As Tampa Bay experiences unprecedented heat, the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center (PRC) is urgently reaching out for community support to ensure the safety and well-being of its canine residents. The shelter is currently at full capacity, with many dogs facing the dangers of extreme temperatures. This situation has prompted an urgent call for assistance from the public.

The PRC is under an extreme heat warning, following weeks of persistent heat advisories. Shelter staff are working around the clock to minimize the impact of the heat on the animals. They have implemented measures such as using large fans, setting up splash pads, distributing frozen treats, and hosing down kennels to provide cooler surfaces for the dogs. Despite these efforts, the shelter is struggling to manage the rising temperatures and needs immediate help from the community.

There are several ways that residents can make a difference:

Foster or Temporarily House a Dog

The shelter is in need of short-term fosters who can provide a comfortable home environment for dogs. This allows them to escape the heat and enjoy a more relaxed setting. Those interested in fostering can apply online through the PRC's website.

Take a Dog on a Day Trip

Through the "Adventure Tails" program, community members can take a dog for a day trip. This could include a visit to a pet-friendly business or simply spending time in air-conditioned spaces. It offers the dogs a much-needed break from the shelter.

Make Frozen Treats

Donations of frozen broth cubes or chilled treat bowls are highly appreciated. These items help keep the dogs cool and comfortable. Other helpful items include yogurt, whipped cream, towels (to freeze), cooling bandanas, and blankets (to wet and freeze). The PRC is located at 440 N. Falkenburg Rd., Tampa, FL 33619, and accepts donations during business hours (Monday-Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM for shelter services). It is important to note that the shelter does not need more pools, fans, or ice at this time.

Adopt

Adoption remains one of the most impactful ways to help a pet in need. Providing a permanent, loving home can make a significant difference in a dog’s life.

Donate and Share

For those unable to adopt or foster, spreading the word and donating are essential. The PRC has an Amazon wish list that makes it easy to send much-needed supplies directly to the shelter. Residents can also reach out with any questions by visiting the Pet Resource Center page on the Hillsborough County website or calling (813) 301-PETS (7387).

Every contribution, no matter how small, plays a crucial role in helping the PRC care for its animals during these exceptionally hot days. The community's support is vital to ensuring the well-being of the dogs in the shelter.
