Canine crisis: Dog saved from Citadel Mall roof

A Unique Rescue on the Roof of a Mall
A dog named Lila found herself in an unusual situation when she ended up trapped on the roof of the Citadel Mall in Colorado Springs. This unexpected event captured the attention of local authorities and animal care professionals, leading to a creative and successful rescue operation.
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) reported that security staff at the mall were surprised to see a dog on the rooftop. They reached out to Animal Law Enforcement (ALE) for assistance, and together they tried to figure out how Lila had ended up there. While many scenarios were considered, one theory stood out—though it seemed a bit far-fetched.
“Our officers are used to seeing dogs in some interesting situations, but normally, those situations involve gravity,” HSPPR joked in a Facebook post. “Yet there she was, Lila the Summer Reindeer, looking around for a chimney and sweating in the Colorado sun.”
According to HSPPR, the most plausible explanation was that Lila believed she was one of Santa’s top reindeer, likely second only to Rudolph. This theory suggested that she had been sent ahead of schedule to gather presents for good boys and girls before meeting up with the sleigh. However, this scenario was a bit off—Lila arrived about five months too early.
Despite the strange circumstances, it was clear that Lila needed help. A plan was put into action, and an ALE officer equipped with a leash and water made his way to where Lila was located. Initially unsure of her visitor, Lila eventually warmed up to the officer after receiving some much-needed water and a gentle pat.
Once Lila was comfortable, she was carefully lifted onto a stretcher while two other officers and mall security helped steady her from below. Slowly and safely, Lila was brought down to the ground, where her rescuers discovered something unexpected—her collar.
“A quick check revealed her owner had been searching for her for six long days, posting on lost pet sites and even filing a lost pet report with us,” HSPPR said. “One phone call later, and the Christmas-in-August saga came to a very jolly end, complete with a joyful reunion between Lila and her human. There were hugs, happy tears, and just the faintest jingling of imaginary sleigh bells in the background.”
This incident served as a reminder to pet owners about the importance of keeping their pets safe. HSPPR provided some tips to Lila’s owner to ensure that such an adventure wouldn’t happen again. These include keeping a collar on your pet, ensuring ID tags are up-to-date, and considering microchipping. Additionally, if a pet goes missing, filing a missing pet report with HSPPR can significantly increase the chances of a safe return.
“No more reindeer games, Lila. At least until December,” HSPPR teased, highlighting the lighthearted nature of the situation.
This unique story not only showcases the dedication of the rescuers but also emphasizes the importance of responsible pet ownership. It serves as a heartwarming reminder that even the most unusual situations can have a happy ending with the right support and actions.
