A family from Buffalo, New York, is facing a difficult situation after being stranded in Sicily due to the ongoing strike at Air Canada. The incident has disrupted their plans and caused significant stress for the entire family. Among those affected are Angela Passalacqua and 12 other members of her family, who were on what was supposed to be a dream vacation in Italy.

The family had planned to return home on August 16, but their flights were canceled due to a labor disruption that is affecting Air Canada’s operations. They spent days trying to contact the airline to find a solution, but it wasn’t until Sunday evening that they were finally able to secure a new flight. However, this new booking is scheduled for next Thursday and Friday, leaving them with no choice but to wait for several more days before they can return home.

Several family members have already had to take matters into their own hands by paying for alternative flights with other airlines. They are unsure if they will be reimbursed by Air Canada for these expenses. For some, the decision to book a separate flight was not optional.

Angela's son and his girlfriend had to return home because of a family emergency. Additionally, her daughter, Sabrina Passalacqua, who works as a nurse at Oishei Children’s Hospital, was forced to book a flight back to the U.S. out of pocket. This cost her approximately $1,700. Sabrina explained that she needed to return to work and didn’t have the luxury of extending her vacation.

Rose Randazzo, another family member, also had to pay for a flight back with a different airline. Her husband spent the same amount to return home. Both of them now face additional costs as they remain in Sicily, needing to rent accommodations for longer than expected.

The situation has become even more complicated for Angela’s mother-in-law, who is only a day away from running out of her medication. At 80 years old, she relies heavily on her prescribed medications. Additionally, Angela mentioned that her children are set to start university classes at the University at Buffalo (UB) soon, adding to the pressure of returning home.

Air Canada’s ongoing strike has impacted roughly 130,000 travelers worldwide. WIVB News 4 has reached out to the airline for comment, but a response has not yet been received.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by travelers during such disruptions. It also underscores the importance of clear communication and support from airlines during times of crisis. As the family continues to navigate this unexpected situation, they remain hopeful for a resolution that allows them to return home safely and without further financial burden.
