The story of Yvonne Ford, a British woman who passed away from rabies after being scratched by a stray puppy during a holiday in Morocco, has left her family devastated. Her daughter, Robyn Thomson, has shared the heartbreaking details of her mother’s final months, highlighting the severity and unpredictability of the disease.

Yvonne, 59, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was on a vacation with her husband in February when she was scratched on the leg by a small stray puppy that was lying under her sunbed. At the time, the scratch seemed minor, and there was no visible blood or signs of illness in the dog. The family dismissed it as nothing more than an inconvenience.

However, months later, Yvonne began experiencing severe headaches and was admitted to Barnsley Hospital. Within days, her condition worsened dramatically—she could no longer walk, talk, sleep, or swallow. She started hallucinating and developed a fear of water, which is a classic symptom of rabies. She was then transferred to Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, where she was finally diagnosed with the virus.

Yvonne passed away on June 11, leaving behind a grieving family and a painful reminder of the dangers of rabies. Her daughter, Robyn, a neonatal nurse, described her mother as the most loving and compassionate person she knew. Yvonne was not only a devoted mother and grandmother but also a passionate animal lover. For her to die from a disease that could have been prevented was particularly heartbreaking for the family.

Robyn explained how shocking it was for the family to learn that her mother had contracted rabies. The scratch occurred in February, and she died four months later. At first, everything seemed normal. Yvonne returned home, went on a family trip to Florida, and even went fishing with her husband. But in June, she suddenly fell ill with a severe headache and rapidly deteriorated.

She was hospitalized and soon lost the ability to move, speak, or eat. Her condition became so dire that doctors placed her in an induced coma. It wasn’t until over a week later that she was diagnosed with rabies. Robyn emphasized that once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. The family made the heartbreaking decision to turn off her life support.

The family later discovered that rabies can take several months to show symptoms, and in some cases, it may incubate for up to two years. This delay made it difficult to trace the source of the infection and raised concerns about the potential risks of exposure to stray animals.

Now, Robyn is determined to use her mother’s tragic death as a catalyst for change. She has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise awareness about rabies and support efforts to prevent it. Her goal is to help vaccinate dogs, improve surveillance, and educate communities about the disease.

Robyn said: “This is something I need to do. If I can save even one life through this work, or spare one family from going through the pain we have experienced, then it will be turning a terrible negative into something positive.”

Her mission includes supporting charity initiatives in Cambodia, where rabies remains a significant public health issue. Through these efforts, Robyn hopes to ensure that no other family suffers the same loss and that the lessons learned from her mother’s death are used to protect others.

By raising awareness and funding critical programs, Robyn is working to transform her grief into action. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preventing rabies and the impact that one individual can have in making a difference.
