A cold case that has haunted the community for nearly 30 years has taken a new turn, as the boyfriend of a slain police officer has been charged with her murder once again. The case, which was previously dropped, now sees the suspect facing first-degree murder charges in the death of Officer Denna Fredericka Campbell.

Campbell, a 24-year-old police officer with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, was found dead in her White Oak apartment on September 16, 1995. She had been shot five times, and her department-issued handgun was missing from the scene. At the time, she was a four-year veteran of the department, known for her dedication and service to the community.

Her boyfriend at the time, Amir Jalil Ali—known then as Kenneth Burnell Wonsom—reported finding her unresponsive after returning from a store. He claimed she had been shot during a burglary and called 911. Ali was initially charged with murder in 1995, but the case was dismissed two months later.

Now, more than three decades later, 62-year-old Ali has been newly charged with first-degree murder. He was taken into custody on Tuesday in Laurel, according to Montgomery County authorities. This arrest marks the resolution of one of the longest-standing cold cases in the department's history.

A Long-Awaited Closure

Montgomery County Police Chief Marc Yamada addressed the press, stating that this arrest brings closure to a case that has lingered for over 30 years. "While this arrest won't erase the pain of losing Denna, we hope that it does bring some resolution or sense of peace," he said.

Ali is currently being held in the Montgomery County Detention Center. The state’s attorney, John McCarthy, acknowledged that he was not privy to the reasoning behind the initial dismissal of the case. However, he noted that the police department’s cold case unit has uncovered more details in recent years, which have helped to strengthen the case against Ali.

Montgomery County Detective Paula Hamill explained that investigators have been reexamining the case for the past year, including conducting new interviews. These efforts have provided insight into Campbell’s life and the fears she may have had regarding her relationship with Ali.

Defense Challenges the New Charges

Ali’s attorney, Richard Finci, has challenged the new charges, stating that "little has changed" since the initial case. He argued that the prior indictment was dismissed due to a lack of evidence, and that the circumstances surrounding the case remain unchanged.

Despite this, the investigation has brought some emotional relief to Campbell’s family. Hamill spoke with Campbell’s father, who reportedly said, "Thank God," upon learning of the arrest. Campbell’s mother passed away several years after the shooting, leaving the family to carry the burden of grief for many years.

Remembering a Hero

Officer Campbell was remembered by her colleagues as a dedicated and energetic member of the police force. Her career was marked by acts of bravery, including an incident in 1993 when she pulled four victims out of a burning van on Pennsylvania Avenue. That act earned her commendation from MPD leaders and praise from the community.

D.C. Metropolitan Police Executive Assistant Chief Andre Wright expressed his condolences to the family and emphasized the impact Campbell had on those around her. "We recognize that today's news doesn't bring Officer Campbell back to her family, our community or our department, but we hope this news can bring some form of closure to all of those who have carried the burden of this tragedy for over three decades."
